    Lease tact

My dad moved back to the area where he has land that has been in a “family deal” lease for the past 15 years arranged by his sister who has 1/3 share, and who doesn’t make many of the payments for water access, taxes, etc. dad is looking at end of life planning, so has paid for official survey...

    Yearling bull fertility

What % of bull calves are fertile at 12 months old? Brangus/angus cross, high libido since about 9 months old, but last blood test 30 days after witnessed “breeding” was negative ( he would have been 11 months at time of breeding). I only need him for 3, AI was terrible last year…

    Camera systems

Does anyone use a remote camera system that can be operated without private Wi-Fi? We’ve had it suggested by the facility where mom is, but they don’t have secure Wi-Fi for access. Can use SD card and do retroactive review I suppose, but would like to also be able to control the system remotely.

    Dang-better raise your own!

Hard to buy anything to feed out at this rate

    A huge blessing

Some of y’all may remember that I spent Thanksgiving in the hospital with my mom. She has frontotemporal dementia and primary progressive aphasia (same as Bruce Willis), which we have been dealing with for about 10 years now. So she can’t say much other than occasional single words or sounds...

    Broomweed

The drought brought a bumper crop of broomweed with it. Mowed it all down in September, but some stragglers remain. 2,4-D didn’t touch it. I’m quite happy with the rest of the forage mix-clover/bermuda/native grasses and some other broadleaf varieties that the cattle will eat. Anything not...

    Hoof rings

Just something I noticed this evening while feeding the butcher steer. Due to lack of rain and limited grass, he’s been on feed (probably about 8 of 10% mix and a scoop of corn a day) for close to 6 months. Interesting to watch the tree rings on the outside.

    Watering trees

We have the best pecan crop in 4 years, and have had zero rain for over 60 days. Starting to water the pecan trees now-just a hose putting a spot of water between 2 trees for an hour-but I know tap water is nothing like that from the sky. I swear it has even killed plants, due to the chlorine in...

    Beautiful morning

It’s 68 this morning, high only expected to get up to 98. Better than the 107 predicted for tomorrow. Still no rain, but the cool is a nice change.

    Feeding in the heat

Do you want more protein or energy? What’s better for gains (or at least holding weight) in 110+ heat index drought conditions?

    TAI taking 2X each time

We have 2 cows and a heifer that we bred TAI (the cows for #3 and #5 calves-daughter/dam). Oldest cow has been bred on 1st AI every year after heifer breeding, rock solid, raises a good calf. Her daughter has required 2 TAI attempts for her 1st 2 calves, missed again on 1st attempt last month...

    Loading areas

I’ve seen lots of topics posted about working alleys leading to head gates and chutes, but how do you have your load-out area set up? We have a full-gate with partial slide trailer, would like to have the full gate open to load, but that creates a lot of room for cattle to turn back. Sliding...

    Sunflowers

Not sure why, but around the Waco area this year a choice crop is sunflowers. Haven’t seen cotton anywhere yet, corn is 8’ tall, wheat and oats being harvested or baled, and these beautiful fields of sunflowers. Nice year with rain and reasonable temperatures.

    Making beef

I’ve got a decent group of people who want to get some “home grown” beef, for 4 years now, repeat customers. I typically butcher 4/year, usually 2 home-grown and 2 purchased steers. Last year’s drought changed a lot, and now extra steers (or young bulls) are really high $, and I still have a...

    Decisions….

Because the grass is growing and I had people wanting beef, I moved my first butcher date from late July to late June. These are the two candidates. Spotted steer is 2 months older, obviously not as beefy-built. I’m happy with the red going first, I figure the white will just take longer to...

    Burdizzo

Other than the fact that you don’t end up with “two on the ground”, what are the drawbacks of Burdizzo vs bands? Knife cut is obvious. Not selling through sale barn generally, as we finish our few steers for beef sales. I’m looking at fly irritation from sloughing and pain levels impacting gain...

    Hay prices

Grass is coming in nicely in central Texas, and it seems there is a lot of it standing, not being grazed. Sellers are still asking $80-100/roll for last year’s corn stalks, you can imagine the price for legit hay. I’m not saying that hay guys shouldn’t make a profit too, but are they following...

    Manure quality on feeder steers

Tried to find a similar thread but failed, so here goes… These 2 steers are 13 and 14 mo (spot is 14) and on feed and spring pasture. Spotted steer was born here feom a purchased cow that ended up having liver flukes (found at processing), was weaned at 5 months and dewormed twice with...

    Small-timer pride

we have what is basically a productive hobby herd, AI a couple of cows, raise their bull calves to freezer size and sell beef. Occasionally we buy an extra steer or two if we’re short of steers for the year. I enjoy the AI sire picking, because I can use something different every time if it...

    Just some random bulls

I’m lucky enough to live near the Texas A&M beef cattle research center. Every week on my way to church, I get to drive past this pasture with probably 50 bulls in it, all kinds, shapes and breeds. Today I decided to pull over and take a few pics. You can see our grass is just getting going down...
