    Constipated?

Nice calf delivered 48 hours ago. Yesterday I noticed the nice orange poop, but most of it was still hanging on the backside of the calf. Today looks the same with maybe a little mucus as well. Calf is alert and bouncy. Do I have cause for concern? Is it time for a enema?

    Current hay prices

I'm curious to know what people are having to pay for hay this winter. Right now I'm buying big rounds for 40 dollars that I have to bring home with my own tractor. When we stocked up this summer, small squares were 3 dollars each.

    98 Silverado electrical issues

Lately when deiving my truck at night, I notice the headlights going dim and then bright again. I first checked the alternator and it was pushing 14 volts at high idle, but only 9 at low idle. I replaced it with a new alternator that runs at a steady 14 volts, but I'm having the same problem...

    Any opinions on Doboy Minerals?

Pretty much as the title states. Has anyone used Doboy/Domain mineral - specifically the Beef Cow free choice, and what do you think of them? Thanks!

I have a 3 point bale spear with a problem. It's bent downward about three inches and I keep dropping bales. Does anyone have a tip on how to get it back in position?

    age of fertility?

I have an unrelated heifer calf and a bull calf, both 5 months old, in the same pasture. The buyer of the bull is wanting me to hold on to him for another month or maybe two before he picks him up. How close am I to the possibility of an unwanted breeding - or am I already past it? Thanks John

    Lutelyse time frame

I gave a cow a shot of lute Friday pm. It's now Monday pm and she's trying to ride the other cow in the pasture. Any ideas as to when I can expect standing heat, or is this it? At this point, the other cow is avoiding her almost completely. Thanks for any tips!

    Wood chewing

Does anybody have some tips on how to get the horse to stop eating their lean-to? I tried the ""No Chew" to no avail. I've heard that mtor oil on the wood may do the trick. Any tips are appreciated!

    Fence problem

I have a five strand high-tensile fence electrified on 2 of the wires. My problem is that I'm getting a small charge on the wires that are supposed to be cold. I've walked the fence line several times and cannot find the problem. Has anyone dealt with this and figured out the cause? I'd love to...

    Fat as a pig?

A few days ago, I posted a question about a prolapsing cow. She's due with her 3rd calf on 4/23. One of the comments stated she was "as fat as a pig". Take a look. I'd like to know if she is, and a group consensus would mean a lot to me. http://cattletoday.com/photos/showgalle ... puser=3507

Vaginal Prolapse? Opinions please. Picture added

Came home today to find a 5 year old cow (Simmental) lounging on the haypile, with what looked like a sock hanging out of her backside. The end of the sock was redish/pink. She's due with her third calf in 30 days. I made a quick call to her seller, who is also my 'mentor'. He told me it happens...

    Simmental sire - opinions wanted

I have a Simmental cow ready to be bred after a disasterous first calving. She's a little on the small side. I have an oppurtunity to use this bull and would like some honest opinions, please. http://cridata.crinet.com/beef/index.ph ... al&lang=EN

    how long to dry up?

A long story for another post, but our first heifer lost her calf during birth two days ago. Temporary paralysis is getting better and she is walking slowly. Her bag is evenly swollen to the point that it makes me uncomfortable. I can't imagine how she feels. Any thought on how long it should...

    Simmental breeding age.

For those of you who raise Simmentals. - At what age do you like to see them have their first calf? Do you believe that they are an exception to the two-year-old rule of thumb? Would they be developed enough for calving at 19 or 20 months?

    Five quarters?

I've got a Simental Heifer due in about 4 days or so. Tonight I was checking out her progress. She's loosening up in back and bagging up well in the front half of the bag. The back half is a little less, but I noticed something odd. In the center of her bag, pointing backwards, is a fifth teat...

    Forage testing and minerals

One of the many things I’ve picked up on these boards is the three essentials for healthy cattle: roughage, water, and mineral. My question is this: How many of you actually do, or advocate the testing of pasture and hay, then base your mineral supplement off of that analysis? If so, where do...

    Any freemartin success?

I know that the fertility rate on freemartins is about 5%, but I'm wondering if anyone out there has had success in breeding one of these? I have a pair of twin holstiens - one bull, one heifer. She's very friendly and I'd love for her to be fertile, although I know the chances are slim. Just...

    Eye problem & injections

Hi eveyone, This is my first post to your board. I discovered it while researching a problem I'm having with a steer. I'm a first year farmer with a pair of 10 month Holsteins and the recent addition of a springing Simmental. The steer developed a weeping eye last week. I immediately consulted...
