    CONFEDERATE MEMORIAL DAY

With the invention of the cotton gin, slavery was already a dying and unprofitable means of farming. Go back and read the actual Lincoln-Douglas debate and you will see that Lincoln had no intention of "equal rights". The sales were not freed by Lincoln (even in the northern states) until well...

    Time to wean?

We do the same except we keep them separate until after they've had their first calf. Like to keep calving heifers close to the working pens "just in case". Norris

whats a good breed to start with

Florida has a climate worse than the Texas Gulf Coast; nothing like Oklahoma or Northeast Texas. Heat, humidity and flies galore! IMO, anyone having cattle in Florida without ear is just asking for trouble. Norris

Alice; it is not all "hurrahs". Being a lady you probably wouldn't understand; but sometimes "Old Bulls" just like to butt heads! Norris

whats a good breed to start with

We had a herd of Herefords in Notheast Florida some 40 years ago. The flys and resulting pinkeye/cancereye was a nightmare! Would certainly not recommend Hereford for that area. Norris

whats a good breed to start with

Originally being from Florida; I can assure you Beefy is right and the further south you go in Florida the "more right" he is! You need some ear in that heat and humidity. Norris

what type of 4 wheeler to buy

It can get pretty hot here, but East Teaxas really has the same climate as middle Alabama or Mississippi. My Kodiak is also a "foot shifter" with a high and low range. Excellent machine! If I had it to do over again I get another Kodiak. Norris

    Water Well Meters

Heard the Texas state legislature was considering putting meter on all "high production" water wells that pump over 26,000 gallons per month. Susposed to only affect large chicken house operations and Companies like Ozarka. Don't know what they're going to do with the data. A new tax on pumping...

what type of 4 wheeler to buy

I have one of the earlier models and had the covers changed under a factory recall. Stll overheated! I was told the louvered covers were to stop the gas from boiling in the carb and had nothing to do with overheating. We actually cooked the oil in the crankcase, afer a couple of week the oil...

what type of 4 wheeler to buy

Went to two different JD dealers on at least 4 occassioons each and they couldn't fix it. All they did was replace the spark plugs. ALL JD lawn mowers have Kawasaki engines. Norris

    Market Outlook

Don't really want to start a fuss here, but would really like some valid numbers on ethanol production from corn. WB claims he can produce 1 acre of corn with 1.25 gallons of diesel while Somn says it takes him almost 11 gallons not counting fertilizer. I have some experience row crop farming...

what type of 4 wheeler to buy

We had a JD 6 wheeler. I'm nothing but a JD man but this was the biggest piece of junk I've ever seen. Great for the first 12 months then the spark plugs would foul out ever couple of weeks. JD dealer finally told me the Kawasaki engine was a lawn mower engine designed to be run wide opeb and...

    New Low

You misunderstand; most of the cattlemen on here are grandfathers with big bellies and gray hair who love nothing more than to share their mistakes and sucesses with beginners. It is a real pleasure to really help a newbie out with a problem. The problem is that there are a lot of phonies and...

    Ranching as a Hobby?

In the first place; NEVER admit you are a "hobby" farmer! In order to take tax deductions for your farm expenses you must have "a reasonable expectation of making a profit at some point in the future"! Calling your farm a "hobby" is like shooting yourself in the foot; no deductions allowed! Norris

How many gallons did it take to produce the fertilizer you used, move the product to market or refine the product? Like CB; I've got to go with the refinning expert! Yes, we've got to find another means of enery but that is awhile off. In the meantime we need to get rid of the tree huggers and...
