    Calm Cows

I had this 600 lb. Holstein steer that was as friendly as a dog- used to folly me home, and i'd have to bring him out a carrot- but he had a knack for stepping on my feet when I fed grain! (I think he broke my toe...it hurt for about 8 weeks!) I've since bought a pair of steel-toe boots!

    do we meddle too much

I'm a former city boy- but I always figured that if ya give the animals what they need, they'll take care of themselves...and the more we mess withh them, the more chances that something's gonna go wrong. In practise, I let my cows free-range. They calve in the woods and eat what they want. I...

    Black cattle. Why?

Greetings from Kentucky, Edde_1, People here in my area have caught the "black cow fever" too! And no one can give me a reason why all black cattle bring top dollar now....but if it so much as has a white spot on it....it's price drops substantially. I can not find a legitimate rason for this...

    Heresy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, I do ask- I will not buy a vaccinated animal- even if it will be going to the stockyard. And...as a matter of fact, one of my neighbors who vaccinated and had cows die from blackleg, had 2 cows which were both under 1 year-old die. Sorry- but I don't buy the idea that the calves have...

    Heresy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, Tom, Unfortunately, I am still using the medicated milk replacer- as the calves i have are still being sold at the stockyard. I use Pedigree Gold, from Burkmann. Weaning between 4 and 5 weeks. (O-K...it's usually closer to 5- I feel sorry for them) Non-medicated milk replacers are indeed...

    Heresy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Eureka! It took me a while to figure out what you were getting at by this question. You're asking how come the picture shows 3 and 4 month old calves while I stated that I've been doing this for [over] a year? LOL....it's called "turning inventory"- I take new calves in every month, and sell...

    Heresy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Miilkmaid, Please ask your relative exactly when the last "outbreak" of whooping cough or polio occurred among the Amsih. I think you will be surprised at the answer- as well as the disengenuousness of the person who gave you the information. (Might be better to look the info up yourself on...

    Heresy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But you're missing the point: My neighbors WHO VACCINATED for blackleg, had blackleg deaths. I did not. What does this tell you? A) The Vaccine apparently does not prevent blackleg. B)It may well cause it, because my neighbors who had the blackleg, all got it(vaccinating at different times)...

    Heresy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry...but I believe vaccines are a hoax- a cruel one. Not only is there no proof of them doing any good, there is proof of them doing harm. All of my close neighbors who all vaccinate for blackleg, have recently had cows die from blackleg. I don't vaccinate, and my cows are fine. I don't...

    Road pipe grates cow crossing

My neighbor has one where his drive meets the paved highway- never had an escapee. Out west, they use these cattle guards extensively, both on private ranchess as well as rangeland- often to keep the cattle off of the interstates and other high-speed highways....I'd say they work pretty good...

    Heresy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've only been messing with bovines for a year- but I don't use drugs/vaccines for them, nor for any other animals (dogs, etc.) that I've had all my life- nor do I believe in vaccines for humans- and all I can say is that my animals and myself are healthier than anyone! (I haven't been to a...

Warning to the Beginners and Wantabees.

It's like any other business that you don't need millions of dollars to start, and in which you have to compete with other average Joes- ya gotta pay attention to the small things and the pennies- and you can make a modest living. I think the reason it's hard to make a buck in any...

    Bottle Calf Question

I like to sell mine between 500-600 lbs. At that weight, it's still cheap to put weight on them, and you only get a few cents less per pound than for 400-500 lb. calves. This way, it seems to maximize my initial investment in the price of the calf, and expense of the milk-replacer. I come out...

    My 1st Heifer- Whadduyah Think?

....sounds alot like the cattle show circuit is doing to cattle what the dog shows have done to alot of purebred dogs- producing animals that can win ribbons...but who have lost most of the true good traits that their breeds were originally noted for. I've had nothing but mised-breed dogs all...
