Miniature Scottish Highland cow & I have questions.

Comb her, any excess hair will shed with the comb, it also will make her much friendlier and easier to handle. We have several pastures with streams and they do like to stand in them. Don't hesitate to put out a lawn sprinkler for her to walk through on hot days, as well as minerals, you may...

    Charged by my Cows Tonight

We raise Scottish highlands, who tend to be very calm yet very protective. With they're long horns we initially were very cautious, and still are, but have learned what we need to watch for. It was explained to me that the highlands choose a pecking order based on horn length/ability to fight...

    First deer rifles

M-1 Carbine, 30 caliber. Not much of a deer rifle, but it was my grandfathers, he was in a wheelchair through my childhood, but I at least got to hunt with his gun and still have it. My go-to is a Remington 722 300 Savage. Absolute deerslayer.

    maple syrup

We're a 7 generation maple farm. Once you've had the real stuff, the rest is just bog water. Besides, everyone knows real maple syrup comes from Maine. :)

    Slaughter question?

Did one a few years ago. Had the excavator handy to move it/hang it while we gutted and skinned. The only issue was we were 50' off the main road during foliage season. A few tourists got an eyeful. Best to do it out of sight.

    Anyone have Hogs ?

I think he better start small. Letting them root is fine, but they need to be rotated, when the pasture comes back a different animal should then be run through. Beef, sheep, whatever. Diversification will be his key to success. Loading a piece of ground with just one species leads to...

    Diamond Bale Wrapper

Anyone own a Diamond or use one? Looking for an inexpensive wrapper, they seem to be selling their 3pth ones for $5500 or so. Bare bones, no frills. I'm only looking to do less than 100 sileage bales per year, hard to justify a $10000 + wrapper. I've looked at a couple used Vermeers, one...

    Farmall 806 help

Never had an 806, had several smaller IH's (504, 300U etc...). Does that pto lever engage a clutch at the rear on the pto housing like the smaller IH's? I know on my 504 there is a clutch adjustment inside the independant pto housing as well as the linkage on the pto lever has adjustments. My...

    completely disgusted with PETA

The problem is that we as farmers have a few bad apples in our midst that open the gate for the likes of PETA. It isn't too much to ask to do thing right and educate the public. Passing laws against filming on farms leads the public to believe we have something to hide and only fuels their...

How do you feel about the Farm Bill without SNAP?

The farm bill is nothing more than welfare for "farmers". If my business can't survive without government aid, then I should fail. I'm amazed at the folks who detest welfare for the needy, but think welfare for a select portion of our agriculture community is needed.

    Silage Bags vs. Wrapping

I've got just a few acres down right now, looks like we'll make it by the skin of our teeth before we get more rain. Still have 50 acres + that we havent made a first cut yet.

    Silage Bags vs. Wrapping

I've never tried doing silage, but with our non stop rain this year I'm considering trying some silage bales and buying the bags to put them in. http://www.farmbagsupplystore.com/balebags.html Anyone tried these, how'd they work? They say they can be re-used, not sure how that will work when...

    The Cemetary Field

Maples Wheatfield Pines When I was a kid we had one called "milking house bars", sheep pasture, meadow etc... I've numbers all of my pastures, but we have nicknames for them. Its funny how some names stick for generations.

    Family Farming Legacies

We've tracked our maple syrup lineage back over 7 generations, the family land goes back slightly further. All the generations farmed and had livestock/work horses. We've always hayed, always tapped trees and always done something on the farm, but we briefly had no livestock at all. I bought...

do you have shade for your cattle?

All of mine were panting last week in the heat. I expect that from the highlands, suprised that the Herefords were also so heated. I opened up a pasture with a small drainage so they could stand in the mud, they seem to enjoy that.
