Calf will not get up - breathing congestion

We never saw him try to get up yesterday, but yesterday we weren't certain he'd be around today. Today, he tries but cannot get up. Therefore, not sculling when we're not there. We've lifted him up so that his feet are on the ground to see if he could stand on his own, but he couldn't...

Calf will not get up - breathing congestion

Here's our status: We tubed him 1 1/2 quarts colostrum, per instructions. This was done approximately 7.5 hours after birth since we did not have supplies on hand. Cleaned his body, continued to rub him, brushed him dry, and brought him into the barn. At +12 hours, tubed him 2/3 quart milk...

OK If this calf has BVD then should the antibiotic be administered concurrent with Banamine? The labels look like they can be done so. Any comments? Thanks again.

Calf - Odd Behaviour - Need Advice

OK. We'll check temperature. I suspect you think it might be pneumonia or eliminate that as an option. I did see the calf cough a couple times but I have seen that before in otherwise healthy cattle. What's the correct way to evaluate breathing? Then, what's the best course of action against...

Calf - Odd Behaviour - Need Advice

No. This bull-calf is the larger (a bit larger) of the two (the other is about 6 months) and we have not observed any fighting between them or him and others. Yes, keeping two bulls in the same field would not be a good strategy.

Calf - Odd Behaviour - Need Advice

Hi All, We have 9 month old Black Angus bull-calf that is behaving odd. He generally doesn't wander with the herd, stays alone most of the time, doesn't seem to eat much, looks healthy, doesn't have diarrhea. When he does walk I see a regular walk, no limp. When I approach him on foot he...

    Eye Discoloration

We have a black angus cow with a discolored eye. We noticed this about 5 days ago. I reviewed other posts and concluded it was pink eye. The next day we put her in the the shoot, rinsed her eye with saline solution, and gave her an injection of oxytetracycline. Orignally the eye was black...

Space required for steer - graining period preslaughter

We've taken a steer out of our herd and are keeping him in a pen about 400 sf. This space was arbitrary - our objective was to have him conserve energy and gain weight. What is the correct amount of space for this 900-1000# steer while we grain/hay him.

How to inspect the underside of a cow's hoof?

What approach should be taken to inspect the underside of a cow's hoof without injury to the cow or the inspector? This is my second post on the same problem ("limping cow") We have a squeeze chute and I suppose it's possible that we could tie a rope around the leg and tie it off so we could...

    Limping Cow

I haven't put the cow in the chute yet, but she was laying down and she had her hoof exposed and I was able to get within 3 feet of her. I could see the top and underside of the hoof and there didn't appear to be anything abnormal (no swelling, weeping, blood, no split or broken hoof). What...

Michele: Thanks for the pics. Are you grinding the cob as well? Didn't see the mechanism for emitting the cob. Are you feeding beef or dairy cattle. How much do you provide the each day (do you ration or just leave it out)?
