Poor mothering heifer, second chance or ship?

Had a first time heifer calve last night. Noticed she looked thin this morning and she seemed to be hunting for something. Found the calf laying by the hay ring, fairly muddy but reasonably healthy, although very small. It got up and ran away when I got too close. Caught it and put it and the...

    Twisting Vermeer Super I belts

Is there a down side to twisting the 6” belts on a Vermeer Super I baler? If there’s one thing that gave me trouble my first season with it, its that I can’t see a thing as the bale is building. I have no idea if one side is larger than the other, and it gets especially troublesome in short...

    Stihl chainsaw problem

I think I probably asked this before, but I’m going to check for ideas on this saw one more time before I throw the piece of shyt in the trash. Its an MS250. The issue is, after cutting a hole in ice about 5 years ago, something happened with the compression that you can barely pull the string...

    Baler belt tracking question

I used my new to me baler for the second time today, Vermeer 505 Super I. First time I had a belt routed slightly wrong, and it didn’t last long. The baler has 14” belts on the ends and one in the middle. Between them are 6” belts. I put the new 14” belt in the middle today and started baling...

    Vermeer Super I string question

I think I recall there are several here familiar with Vermeer balers? I bought a 505 Super I recently and had a question on how the electric tie works. What exactly pulls the string into start wrapping the bale? Do I need to be feeding in some hay like the "old" balers or does the roller grab...

    Vermeer K series balers

Can anyone offer any input into Vermeers K series of balers? I can tell they weren’t real popular, though I’m not sure if there’s a reason? Its getting late in the year and I still haven’t found a baler. There’s a 604K within a couple hours away for a reasonable price, so I was thinking of...

    Feeding 3 week old orphan

Saw something funny from the house tonight, and upon closer inspection found one of my cows tits up. Not sure what happened, but she has a three week old calf that’ll need fed. Its far from tame, and once I manage to get it caught I doubt it’ll be interested in a bottle from me. Whats the best...

Wanted to brag on my boy a little...

After shooting a small buck and doe his first couple seasons, my 10 year old has been dead set on getting a "nice" buck. He's insisted on going every conceivable minute the last two years, hunting in weather from 70 degrees to -3 degrees, and to his credit never complained once. He's been ready...

    Selector control valve leak

One of the SCVs on my hay tractor has an internal leak. As soon as I hook up to the remote, there's fluid flowing through. Took it to a hydraulic shop and they said there's nothing they can do. Is my only option to buy a new (used) valve? Edit: It's looks like this one.

    Fly bait

Can anyone suggest a “potent” fly bait? Either I’m doing something wrong or Golden Marlin isn’t what it used to be. I have a serious issue here that requires using all methods of elimination.

    Shortest gooseneck trailer ever?

Anyone ever seen something like this? It doesn't seem like it's even long enough for a horse. Just seems odd to me. An d what does "Ready to go through bread or warm blood" mean? https://columbus.craigslist.org/grd/6066950509.html

    Cold weather starting aids?

Was wondering if anyone had any good tips for starting a warm blooded diesel tractor in the winter. I have a mid ‘80s Deere 2550, and the only factory starting aid it came with is a device to screw on a can of ether. Someone added an intake heater, but it helps very little. If I keep a heat lamp...

    Redoing pasture

I know all areas are different, but I’ve seen tremendous changes just by getting the pH and nutrient levels corrected.

    Pulling JD Rotodiesel injector pump

Just curious if anyone has any tips for removing a Rotodiesel injector pump from a JD tractor. Everything is unhooked but I need to press the shaft loose, and so far haven’t been able to get it to pop off. It calls for a special JD tool, but I can’t find one anywhere on the web. I tried a...

Had to pull a dead one- When to you intervene?

I really missed the bus last year and kept an old cow I should have culled. She looked fine last year, but late this winter she started going downhill. Turns out her teeth are shot. I knew she was close to calving so I was just waiting. Last night around 6 I was getting ready to bale a bit of...

A "what would you do" scenario

I had a long story typed out, but I’ll try to keep this short so as to not waste anyone’s time. I’ve got a calf born Sat I’m a little concerned about, but not sure it’s justified. It appears to be a preemie, I tubed it with about ½ a quart of colostrum supplement shortly after birth (more to...

    Alley/chute advice?

Was wondering if anyone could offer some suggestions to getting calm cattle to move into my chute. I know my setup isn’t great, but it’s temporary until I can get something more permanent built in a better location. What I have works fine for calves and any cow with a normal flight zone, but...
