    Embryos

Most ranches I have visited with will guarantee 50% conception if you use a certified embryologists. What are others experiences?

    Embryos

Polledbull, I was basing my costs on buying the embryos and placing them in someone else's cows and buying the calf back at .15 over market. Sorry I didn't clarify. Thanks for the information though! JZ

    Remitall - Texas?

I saw in Remitall's bull flyer that they are opening a location in Direct, TX. I guess that is one way to beat the border closure. Ship embryos and have the calves born in the states.

    Longevity or Lack of It

Ensign Ranches in Utah is a really large commercial operation that breeds their own bulls. They do not retain a bull or female out of a cow less than 7 years old. Obviously this would not be feasible for a purebred operation but I found their strategy to be interesting. They aren't just doing...

    Embryos

$500 seems to be a pretty solid price for quality embryos. You can get them cheaper, but it may be some pretty old genetics. I ran the numbers on ET and the cost per calf (based on a 50% conception rate) was around $1,500. Which based on today's cattle market may not be that bad of a deal.

My understanding is that the herd is angus as well.

    Bear Tooth Ranch is sold

Yes, he even with the sale of Beartooth Mel Gibson still has pretty substantial livestock holdings in Australia.

    Bear Tooth Ranch is sold

Beartooth has had angus and gelbvieh since Mel Gibson bought the ranch. Don't know too much about the gelbvieh program, but the angus program has been amongst the elite for the last 10+ years. They didn't buy a lot of cattle (not a member of the $100,000 cow trading club) but they always had...

    Bear Tooth Ranch is sold

Back when I was a teenager in the early 80's, Beartooth was the deal in the Polled Herefords (along with Glenkirk Farms). The thing I remember about a lot of the Beartooth bulls (esp. Driver and Advancer 12H) was that they were a little shy on milk and pretty heavy on birth weights. I also...

Angus Bull SAV 8180 Traveler 004

Schaff's Angus Valley just completed their bull sale that featured his progeny and it averaged over $5,000 a head. From what I've heard his sire group was among the strongest in the sale.

    Favorite Operation

From a hereford standpoint, I really like the cattle at Colyers and Barber. These cattle really express a lot of muscle. In other breeds, I think we could all learn a lot from Gardiners (angus), Fink (angus/charolais) and M6 Charolais. These ranches are as entrepreneurial and well-managed as...

Old Time Herefords..... Just for Camp

The "newer" bull on the bottom is L1 Pacesetter, one of the foundational sires for Colyer in ID. You can check him out at http://www.hereford.com under the herd bull section.

What is your favorite Hereford bull?

Though I favor polled herefords, it is hard to argue with C-S Pure Gold. He slaps as much muscle on an english bred animal as I have ever seen. It appears his daughters are getting it done as well. I saw two CL Domino 212M bull calves out of Pure Gold last weekend in Ft. Worth that had more...
