    A Question to Our Members.

We had Maines, Shorthorns, and Angus cattle on our place. Maines because that is what my wife's family showed in 4-H and FFA, Shorties because we got into them together, and we happened upon a good Angus cross because when we were in college and our cows were at my in-laws place they had an...

    Opinions on new bull

Overall I think he's a nice looking bull and I would only want a little more cover over his ribs, but you don't want him massive either. People will debate a month of Sundays over a bull, likes and dislikes. However, it's really how his offspring perform that really matters.

    Newest Addition To The Herd

An overall visually appealing heifer! She may not be perfect to the breed standard or to someone else's opinion, but I think she is a great heifer!

Bad News For All Of Us!

I can see how this might effect the beef industry on the short term, but if you were like me, I was raised on meat and potatoes. Nothing I like more than a thick juicy steak fire seared and just done. I think doctors are coming up with some of this nonsense to try to sell pills. Just look at...

    Soon end of the pastureseason

I wouldn't bet against PETA or HSUS trying to pass some kind of ridiculous law like that. However, I would think the Cattle Association would have some type of lobbying pull to stop something like that. Imagine the financial impact that would have on the large operations to try to house 10,000...

    Cow Size

Our cows run between 1100-1300 lbs. Anything bigger eats us out of house and home and anything smaller doesn't have the capacity to carry calves year after year. We sold a Maine and a Maine/Shorty that were both gigantic. They were dinosaurs, but they weighed 1350 and 1300 respectively. I...

    Angus Cattle

Perfectly said. The American public has been bombarded by the marketing campaign and most people will tell you Angus is superior in taste to other breeds. However, I would bet the ranch that 99% of the public couldn't tell the difference between and Angus steak and a Simmi or Hereford steak.

Picture of a young shorthorn bull in his working clothes

Yes bigger isn't always better. A couple of years ago my SIL's FIL had to get a new Char bull because his broke a cow's back when breeding her. Well the new bull they got, got sick and they called my wife and I to come down to the pasture and help them give it shots. They have a wood corral...

    some replacement heifers

Where in Iowa are you located? I'm in NW Iowa. Nice looking group of ladies. It's nice to hear that show judges are starting to look past color when deciding classes. The last show we went to the judge was even docking calves for being too big for their age and/or frame. About time that...

    shorthorn

My wife and I both love Shorty's. Rod is right, though, you have to watch the genetics to see that these cattle are bred to the breed standard and not what is the new showring fad. They do cross well with any breed, but you should be UTD on the known carriers of TH so you don't breed to...

I like him. There has been some size criticism, but people need to remember that he is only 14 months old. He'll fill out. Nice job!

    Will he make a bull?

I think he looks good now, but Like Beefy says, when I need a bull I need one now. I don't want to spend the time and money growing one unless he's spectacular and so far we haven't had any born here yet.

    Bulls; what's the difference

Well said. We bought an Angus bull this year with EPD's out of the roof, plus he looks good, and most of all have a great temperment for between that price range. There's nothing wrong with AI sires, and we use them to improve the genetics of our herd. I think it's about advertising and the...

    BW corelation to WW

A BW/WW post has once again been transformed into low BW calvers vs high BW calvers. Ol' Rod at Diamond S Cattle Co. and I have gone around this issue before and when it's all said and done, what works for him is great and what works for me is great. Any way I find that as our cows age they...

    Critique Me

Yeah I don't know if she is short hipped or just on the uphill incline. She also don't have the length of rib for my tastes. I like a longer ribbed cow so they have the space to carry calves. She looks healthy with good cover.

    Makes one Wonder

Now first I just want to say that some people don't mind calving out 100-100+ lb. calves, but I do. I check BW's all of the time whether I'm buying replacement heifers, bulls, or weighing just born calves, their BW's are very important to our business. For Shorties, 100 lb. BW is a little...

    Crossing Longhorns

Those numbers are the reason why I would like to try it out. Did the calf just get weaned out of pasture or did you have him on feed?

    Miniature Herefords

My wife and I like going to the National Western Stock Show in Denver every January and we've seen mini herefords there. Does anyone have any experience with them? Are there other mini cattle breeds? I'm not looking to raise any just curious.
