    automatic milking

Culling at 50 lbs.? Geez! I know of some guys that's there herd average! LOL Current dairy I work for uses 30 lbs. as the cutoff if they're open.

    New to dairy

Dun...did you use Dairy Comp 305 to record your data as you tested? Never had seen that until the dairy I used to work for. Pretty cool how you can see the increase/decrease at the end of the shift, once it is printed.

    Brown Swiss

Boss has two Brown Swiss in a herd of over 580+ milking Holsteins. One is a real pain, literally. She fast gained the reputation as what I refer to as a "lighting bolt kicker". Second one is a bit "steppy" but laid back and easy to handle. Production from her isn't spectacular, maybe peaked...

    Wisconsin still rocks! :D

    Milking parlor

I'd second the portable milker unit as well, unless you are interested in running a full fledged dairy. :)

    Mastitis...

Does the "red stuff" have a milky appearance or is it bloody "fluid"?

    Grass fed

I'd be highly skeptical that any dairy cow was fed "just" grass. They wouldn't have much milk to market. :P

    Asanemia?...Ketosis

Not sure if it affects the taste, I don't make a habit of drinking milk from ketotic cows. LOL But there is a powder Keto-check, that'll turn purple if exposed to a cow's milk that is keto positive.

heifer not bred but bagging up

I'd too guess the vet made a mistake. This last winter a cow freshened where I work who was on the cull list, identified as "open."

    milk prices

Think the boss is getting about $20 now with premiums. We have this running joke that anything over 30,000 lbs a day they make money. Probably fairly accurate though.

    Check out this udder!

    I couldn't agree more!

    Mastitis

What can you get locally? I have no idea about drugs and if Valley Vet or another place similar will ship into Canada. They sell mastitis treatment and, in the case of Valley Vet, it'll usually arrive in 24 hours. Here's the link for Valley Vet. They sell both ToDay and CefaLak. I've treated...

    Mastitis

Hum ok. That might say why she isn't responding to the IMM treatment. Some strains resist penicillin. Not sure what you have for farm stores around there, but here you can get some drugs like ToDay or Hetacin right off the shelf and don't have to go through a vet. When you're reading labels...

    Mastitis

Never heard of the drugs you mention. What's the base for the IMM drug? I'll once again sing the praises of IMM Pirsue and IM Polyflex. Another one that I've seen some success with is Hetacin K, which is basically IMM Ampicillin. Banamine or Pred-ef helps with swelling too.

How often to milk a cow?

Think you can buy Cefa-Lak as well through a farm store. Not sure about Hetacin, which targets E. Coli. I've always preferred Pirsue for dairy cattle...just seems to take care of the problem a lot faster. If you want to give an IM drug I've had great luck with IM Polyflex (Ampicillin)...

How often to milk a cow?

I'd be a little slow to use LA200 for mastitis unless she was highly acute. A drug like IMM Pirsue works great.

    federal inspection

I've been asked before, and I really have no clue when the inspector comes to where I work. Place stays clean no matter what. :)

    federal inspection

Best of luck if they DO show up. How often are you state inspected?

    Dairy Cattle Prices Slipping??

You're looking to start a dairy? I saw one economist had projected milk at $20 by 2008. How accurate that it is remains to be seen, but don't let lousy milk prices scare you out of a good industry. :)

    E. Coli

They do have a surveillance camera in there dun. How much it is used is open to debate, and it isn't hooked to a recorder. I did mention it to the herd manager, and he said that from what he can see this one shift is doing it correctly. I have no doubt that they change their behavior when he...
