    best feed for steer

Hope you're not planning on making any profit. If he hasn't been on grain previously, you won't even have time to get him up to speed on the amount of grain he'd be able to handle in the short time you want to keep him. In other words, you have to start grain at about 1 pound per day and build...

    Hauling cattle

When I bought two head last fall I called around and the going rate was $3.00 per loaded mile. That's what I paid to have mine hauled home from the auction. Head count didn't matter.

Old cow stuck in mud. Please help

Once when I was working in Anchorage a guy went walking on the mud flats in the inlet at low tide and sank to his waist and couldn’t get free. Local rescue hooks a harness to his upper body and proceeds to pull him out with a helicopter. They pulled the guy in half. That experience taught...

Did Turbo Tax ask specific questions relating to Ranching? Also did you get the Deluxe, Premier or Pro version? I don't see one for $67.

    Calf wants more milk

Sure, the dairy up the road from me has a bunch of nice looking young heifers. I'm not sure how they do it though. I figure we pretty much see it the same way Dun. These guys going against the instructions might be the ones who are going to be responsible for changing the instructions on the...

    Calf wants more milk

Dun, I must say I'm surprised that an experienced cattle man like you would put more stock in what a guy in a white lab coat says versus a group of dairymen getting dirty and getting it done.

    Calf wants more milk

Alice2, I’m guessing that they are about 10 to 14 days old but not certain. The lady at the dairy called to say that she had 2 calves 3 days old ready to go. When I went to pick them up, I pulled up right as some farm hands were pulling a calf. I got out and watched as one hand carried the...

    Calf wants more milk

My wife and I have been bottle feeding two Holstein calves for a few days now with good success. We’re feeding a 20% fat, 20% protein, all milk non-medicated replacer. We’re mixing 250 grams of replacer in 1 quart of water twice daily (every 12 hours.) Tonight after we finished feeding and...

    Calf Safe Fly Spray

Thanks all. I used some permethrin 10%, (2 ounces in 1 gallon) and soaked a clean shop rag. I wiped the guys down and it seems to have done the trick. These are Holsteins confined in a 10' x 15' horse stall. Momma's back at the dairy so no problem with her licking. Thanks again.

    Calf Safe Fly Spray

I'm sure it has been discussed before but I'm not having any luck searching for info on a safe fly spray for young calves (2 weeks old.) Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

    What would you do?Poll

Never understood keeping a dog on a chain. I've never seen a dog (especially large breeds) kept on a chain that didn't lose it's mind. Almost all will be mean when kept on a chain full time. If you have to keep your dog on a chain, you don't have any business with a dog.

    Grass-fed vs. Grain-fed beef

Heaven help us if we have to rely on the government for a definition. I prefer Mirram Webster. Grass : any plant of the family Gramineae, having jointed stems, sheathing leaves, and seedlike grains. Grain : a small, hard seed, esp. the seed of a food plant such as wheat, corn, rye, oats...
