Dun,

Looks like you made a fine choice in picking your replacement. Don't let it get you down, father time will catch up with all of us some day. Look on the bright side, I bet your cows find him much more attractive than you.

I like him real well - well, he might be better with a blaze face :p
So are you going 100% bull service - or will you AI a few at beginning of season?
I know that had to be a real hard decision - but looks like you got a great replacement - for a RA :p

Nice looking bull. Did you pull him out of one of them straws and inflate him?

What is his breed, Dun? :cboy:

Red Angus.
In an earlier post someone asked about bloodlines.
Sire is Glacier Chateau
Dam is a Top Brass daughtger out of a Heaven or Bust cow.
Hope that made sense

I'll still AI but use him for cleanup. If I feel I can't do the job on any given day he'll get a little use sooner.
Now comes the fun part of trying to figure out how to manage the cows and heifers when there is a bull around.

good looking young'n dun i thought you didnt believe in cleanup bulls

When I was younger and din;t need "arm viagra" and my hands worked better I didn;t. The choice was sell out or get a bull. I think this was a harder decision then when I asked my wife to marry me almost 40 years ago.

Nice looking bull. But I thought you were strictly an AI guy. What gives?

Arthritis getting too bad. I had considered totally getting out of the business (again) and staying out when I was having trouble breeding cows. Conception rates are still ok, but where I used to be in and out in a minute maybe 2 now it's more like 5 minutes. Other then the bulls that pretty much just ran wild in the canyons, this is the first bull we've ever had. Still not happy about having to relinquish any of the breeding chores.

Dun,
I have done my cows this year AI (well most still have a bull, not that good or brave yet)
If I could get in and out in just five minutes, I would be VERY proud!!!!
Takes me awhile but I do get the job done at times

Nice bull, give him a nice pet on the head for me.;-)

Well I'm sure most of us on here are glad you didn't get out of the business. But I sure know what it's like to give up certain things because of age or injury. Hard to do sometimes, but time marches on. Good luck.

Yes, keeping a breeding age bull around is A LOT DIFFERENT!!! I always told everyone, "we never have a breeding age bull around here EXCEPT my husband" - always got a good response on that one :p :D
Anyway, bulls (at least Macho) likes to rub/push/crunch EVERYTHING that's not protected with electric fence. Can't give him a big bale of hay with or without a ring. He will pick the ring up and/or crunch it, than proceeds to push the bale everywhere. Had to build a special wooden feeder for his hay - hand feeding - yuk.
But it sure is nice, when a cow/heifer is in heat, and you want her bred to him - he takes care of the job in less than 5 min. :p Also, when you decide you've AI enough - turn him out. Actually, that is hard for me - I want to KNOW when they are due to calve. Heat checking when he's out was really HARD. If you didn't catch him actually messing with one, none of the other cows did any jumping or messing around. It was very strange. Cows acted DIFFERENT with him out there. You don't find "cow discharge" on their tail or rump - he cleans them up.
So looks like I'm going to have SURPRISES next year.

dun,
got any black bulls around there you want to put up a picture of? :p

j/k, i know you dont like black bulls.
