Last night was Fairview, IL breeding stock special for the month. They always have a good sale, but they have been exceptionally high lately. Those high $ pairs were sold in groups of 4-6.

Tuesday, April 5, 2022 - Packer Day-Breeding Stock

The April Cow Sale featured three groups of program 2-year olds with calves at side from reputable sources. They ranged in price from $2300 to $3500 and had a lot of interest. Also featured was a dispersion of older true fall calving cows and they found new homes from $1200 to $1800.

Several breeding bulls sold with a top of $2500 with the majority selling from $1700 to $2400. The balance of the bred cows were mostly all 2nd and 3rd periods topping out at $1950. A limited number of these cows had exact calving dates which meant most will be summer calvers. The balance of the pairs were mostly 4 to 10 year olds and topped at $2600. The majority range din price from $1700 to $2350.

531 slaughter cattle including 174 fed steers and heifers that sold with good demand on a steady market! Top was $150.00.

A heavy run of slaughter cows traded mostly steady with condition very up and down through the sale. Best demand continues to be no the thicker, smooth made cows with yield! A higher percentage of low to average yielding cows were present in t oday's offering. Bulls also sold steady with last couple of weeks.

I bought three solid mouth Charolais crossbred pairs this week for $1365 per pair. I thought they were nice. Cows have black noses and average 1250 lbs. They are good uddered and very gentle. Calves weigh 180. 240 and 305.
The bad was the 305lb calf is rat tailed.
The pairs here are much cheaper than what SBMF is seeing and I think they are the best deal going right now if you want to add some.

My bull calves today averaged 477 and cost 170.45.
Got 1 yellow charolais X bull calf weighed 370 for 1.60. In 15 minutes they will all be steers.

Here's the results from Navasota this past Saturday. They had a special stocker sale before the regular sale, so the stocker cow and pair prices are a little higher than they would be on an ordinary sale day.

How was your trip up to Greenville? Did they have good number of head?
Good trip. I jump on 161 until it hits 127. Let's just say I was very happy how they sold especially being my first time there and then not knowing me. I'll have to look on their web page to see how many head but they normally have a good amount at the feeder special if I'm not mistaken.

What size you shooting for this fall? I'm going to start running 350 pounder stockers up to 550-600. It don't pay much here to go farther until you get to fat it seems.
I'm shooting for bigger than they are now. Lol
Remember I buy a lot of oddball calves. Got 2 older men that want 5 each 300lb calves. They take care of them for me. I will get them back this fall.
Another place the guy wants 10 450lb steers. Get them back Labor Day weekend.
10 cow calf pairs 1 place, 5 pairs another.
I will keep 25 pair at my place and pick up odd calves all summer.
I delivered 6 Longhorn steers this morning weighing 735. Gave .50 for them this winter. Sold for .90 today.
So for me my goal is to make money without spending much.

Nice job on the longhorns.

I think that's what a lot of people forget, cattle should be a low cost converter.
