Very, Very Old Angus Genetics

i've seen some bulls that are kept in corrals that might need trimming due to lack of travel as animals are designed to walk. i've also seen animals with toe injuries, especially around barns etc from a stray nail or whatever and need treatment. as soon as one hoof is injured, it makes it extremely difficult on the other 3 feet. feet start to deform, muscle atrophies and grows in other areas. it can be a mess. it's also probably not the best on feet to walk on pulverized manure instead of pasture. lots of reasons other than conformation or whatever that animals go lame. yes, lots of animals don't go lame under similar conditions.
It only takes one deep bruise on the bottom of one hoof to potential screw up all 4 feet, none of it having anything to do with genetics.

Andy how about posting a link or some pictures we can see of those foundation bred cattle. Both breeds please!
I have posted some in the past, I don't know how good the pictures in my camera are, so will get some new pictures of the Angus this week and post them, the Hereford are overwintering on another farm, so will have to wait untill I am up country, but will get some pictures then.
The farm website needs updating, so there are no decent pictures there at the moment I will speak to the new computer marketing girl to get some good livestock pictures on.

I always enjoy going to the breeder sales where they have the old foundation sire's pictures hanging on the wall. This is a very interesting thread, and I have looked at some of the semen sales catalog sites where they only had little semen of a bull remaining. The prices were out of sight.
One thing I have noticed about the cattle's hoove's; the cattle with a straighter shoulder, their feet stay in good shape, and the toes stay trimmed, but the ones with the sloping shoulder, the toes tend to get longer. Of course that is a no brainer. I have seen bulls with good shoulders covering cows in the pasture, but still, their toes were getting too long.
So,a straight shoulder does have one good trait!

Both the Aberdeen Angus and Hereford herds here at Laverstoke park are pure native strains with 100% tracability to the original foundation cattle, having had no infusion of any other breeds.
There has been an increasing demand for the 'old' genetics especially for inclusion in herds which are grass finishing.

I'm assuming this herd is made up of both, the red and black hided?

I was looking at the Octoraro Angus sale catalog. I knew they concentrated on old genetics, primarily Wye animals, but I was amazed at some of the pedigrees. They have a 2 year old bull they use named Ballot 6, who was sired by a bull born in 1954. I followed the pedigree of on the Dam side all the way back to Queen of Ardovie. Reg. #42, DOB 1/1/1836.

Has anyone seen their cattle? Are there some hereford breeders out there doing this type of thing?

Well- ask me in about 10 years how those old Ballot of Belladrum genetics like the shortgrass country of northern Montana... ;-)
I just got off the phone with Taylor over at Whitney Creek Ranch- who informed me that the Octoraro Ballot STO 6 (15521058) daughter out of a Logan of Wye UMF 6692 daughter (15461051) that I put in a bid for at his sale today was one of the ones we'd gotten bought....

If she performs as well as some of the other heifers I've bought from him- I'm sure I won't be disappointed...

As an overdue update we recently had a heifer calf sired by Alezus of Craigie out of a Jols Eric of Craigie daughter, heifer calves sired by Alexegi of Craigie out of a Jols Eric of Craigie and Jotham Eric of Craigie daughter, two Forceful of Wye sired heifer calves out of Forward of Wickwire daughters, and two Black Lode of Craigie sired bull calves out of similarly bred cows. Still some of the old stuff being put to use and functioning well.

Bishop...you really have no idea what you are talking about.

Just started with this thread.
Kdpihf, I'm intrigued by your use of older genetics. I don't know anything about Angus genetics, but I'm curious about the age of the semen you are using. How long has it been on ice? Is any of it widely available? Have you found viability to fertilize decreases with age?
Thanks

Do you have any pictures of your cattle or a web site? I would be interested in learning more about your cattle.
Thanks!

Here is picures of a few of my cows- with their calves...These pics were taken in Sept- the calves were weaned Nov. 1...

The last bull calf is the first calf out of the Octoraro Ballot STO 6 heifer ( a Ballot of Belladrum grandson)... We sold him to an Angus ranch (D & L Angus) that was looking for some outlier genetics... Many folks that bought the bulls were interested because they were looking for different genetics... As one fellow said- you can go to half a dozen sales- and see almost the exact genetics at each..

where can the great old Wye genetics be obtained nowadays?

If you are interested in Wye cattle here is a website you might want to look at:

http://wyeangus.umd.edu/History.cfm

Wye bulls semen is available - and if you have an interest in cattle- you should get the book The Breed of Noble Bloods by Lingle... A history of the breeding and development of the Wye line of cattle... I recommend anyone that is interested in cattle breeding should read it... I know they have a printing in stock now- because I just ordered... If you run some Wye bloodlines they make a good gift for bull buyers...

Those are some fanastic looking cattle Oldtimer... I especially like the Whitney Creek bull and that same bull calf (2nd one down) that caught your eye.

I found a good source for Wye straws, thought I'd share- http://www.sustainablegenetics.com He also has a partner in S.Georgia with straight Wye blood and New Zealand blood bulls available. Personally, I like Beral and Bannon the best.

Thanks brihop-- Yeah, I'm aware of Sustainable Genetics... Universal semen sales in Great Falls MT now has Bannon of Wye semen too ...They also have the Shoshone breeding bull that Taylor now has in Montana- Shea Emo 774- in their lineup... http://universalsemensales.com/breeds/a ... ea-emo-774

hey guys...

I became a partner in "Sustainable Genetics" last year, and am starting "Pinebank Southeast" this year, a partnership with "Pinebank Angus" out of New Zealand. We're getting started with about 90 embryos this year, and plan to grow at that rate for the next few years. Checkout http://pinebank.co.nz/ for a complete rundown on a truly unique operation, and what promises to be a great outcross with old-line angus genetics here in the states. I'm also developing 17 yearling Wye bulls for sale next spring. They came from Ed Oliver, an outstanding breeder of Wye cattle. I've been buying bulls from him for the past 3 years to develop replacement heifers and steers for my grass finishing operation. My business model will be to sell grass based genetics to producers in the Southeast, have them retain heifers and breed back to grass genetics, and sell me the calves at a premium to market prices. I've finished my first 90 acre grazing pivot, modeled after New Zealand style grazing dairy. It has 9 permanent pie-shaped subdivisions, and can be subdivided easily into 27 paddocks with polywire. My first 40 steers are finishing in the next 4-8 weeks on rye and ryegrass....briskets are starting to swell. If you have any questions about the operation feel free to PM.

The following is prime example of PInebank Angus' mission. Deep barrel chested, great feet and legs, and just plain bullish. He was 15 months old at the time, grown on nothing but grass. Albeit predominantly perennial rye and clover. Probably won't look like this on my bahia, but i bet we can grow them on Ryegrass and Tift 85. Can't wait to have the first calves hit the ground in 2014.

Nice looking bull Dan... One of the things I like about the Pinebank and Wye bulls I've seen is the nice straight backs on them... They might not have the length of some of the high performance cattle- but they stand up a whole lot better...
Some of the bigger, better, fasters promoted so highly in the semen studs anymore are more swaybacked than a 30 year old horse... ;-) I can't see how their daughters could hold up long in rough country where they have to get out and rustle to find a blade of grass or a waterhole...

Dan,
Like OT, I like the looks of the bull. Do you mind sharing his pedigree?
