I had a set of twins born on Memorial day. These are beef cattle. The mother is about 10 years old and is in great health. The twins could not figure out how to nurse until the 4th day. We put the mother and the twins in the barn together and started a mixed colostrum. Feed it twice then started milk replacer. Once they figured out how to nurse we continued and are still offering milk replacer twice a day and sometimes one or both drink about half of the recommended amount. Could it be that the mother will never have enough milk to carry them both. I'm wondering if they see the bottle as an extra snack and realy don't need the replacer. We are moving the herd to another pasture soon and would like to move these when we do. The mother is very aggitated to be kept in the barn, and she really wants to be with the rest of the herd. The twins are not identical and are both heifers.
Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.
