My vet implied they'd come out on their own, but evidently they don't always!

I took a heifer in to the clinic mid or early-August of last fall before I left for college, for surgery to correct a hernia. My vet sewed her up, said the stitches would come out on their own. Well... I've been back home for a few weeks, and I was working outside the other day and noticed something hanging down that really didn't look like straw on that heifer's underside. Penned her last night, and sure enough, most of them had come out on their own, but there were three still in there and it was 'kind of' infected. I took my surgical scissors and clipped and pulled them out, but I just thought that was kind of intriguing. Didn't realize they'd stay in for 5 months.
