Are you pumping from a well or surface spring?

From a 46 ft well yr round

In our case, the sand (very fine sand) seems to be a problem at start-up and for about 3-4 minutes after. Then the water clears up.

Grundfos told me not to worry about it as they send their solar units all over world for some extremely harsh conditions.

I have searched for some type of screen that I could place over the bottom of the pump but there really isn't anything available. Having a lot of sand at the bottom of my holding tank could pose another problem at the outlet so, I'll put some kind of filter back over the outflow to catch sand there.

That sand will probably not cause any problem at first. As time goes it will cause damage to any valve it runs through. Water troughs probably would not be a concern. If it is not filtered out it can ruin the valves in washing machines, ice makers faucets,etc.
