That's when the buyer and the seller sit down with a cup of coffee, six-pak, or whatever, and haggle over the price to be paid for cows or bulls.

An example of a private treaty sale would be: you have a heifer for sale, I come by your farm and make a deal with you to purchase her. There's no hauling her to a sale, paying commissions, fees etc.
