For those who are interested in a test to show whether a calf is carrying the horned gene, the test is here:
"MMI Genomics and NALF are pleased to announce the planned launch of the first DNA-based
diagnostic test for homozygous/heterozygous polled cattle. MMI's TRUE-POLLED™ DNA test launch is planned for early December during the Limousin VISIONS Symposium. Breeders are reminded that horned and single polled (one polled parent and one horned parent) animals already have known genotypes and need not be tested. Animals that are known to be double polled (both sire and dam are polled) are hence the best candidates for the test, with test results indicating either homozygous polled, heterozygous polled or horned as possible predicted genotypes. Since the test is not for the actual polled mutation, but rather uses reliable and closely linked SNIP markers, MMI plans to report accuracy values for each reported TRU-POLLED™ genotype. Breeders interested in testing animals are advised to contact the NALF office for further information and testing kits. If an adequate number of samples are continuously submitted for testing, the average turn-around time for results is expected to be approximately 10 business days from receipt of sample, and guaranteed to not be greater than 20 business days. I went to the website, but didn't see the info yet. The tentative price that I've seen is $115 per animal and it will work on Herefords, too.
