Pleasant Surprise

Help Support CattleToday:

not that I have noticed.....last year it rained acorns....
few walnuts
few pecans....
have not looked at the hickories....but have not observed the ground littered with them either which is normal....
squirrels....i am plagued with the fuzzy tailed rats. but they are not causing the nut shortage....we have has fuzzy rats for years....

I have tons of walnuts on the walnut tree I think they have started falling if not mistaken or already fell I dont have a pecan tree that is producing yet but I have been working out as farm as farmville and there was many trees without acorns wonder why no acorns?

Sky, you don't know anybody that grows oats?? I would run an ad on Craigs list for oats. I planted 120 bu. of oats for the deer, and cows. I mix 5lb red and 5lb crimson clover together and put it in 15lbs boss ryegrass per ac. makes a great late winter-spring forage. I broad cast the ryegrass and clover, and drill the oats with some winter peas.

not to many people around here fool with oats too much. That sounds like a good mix I may try the ad. Southern states use to sell them but they don't have them this year I could order them from the place I buy my row crop seeds im sure. Do the deer really love the oats ?

Yes here in the south oats are hands down the best. The deer and cows will walk through winter rye and wheat to eat the oats. You need a cold hardy oat, that's why I was thinking something grown local. For the deer try some sugar beets. Kind of like a turnip but sweeter after a frost. And the deer will paw the root up and eat it like candy.

I have heard of the sugar beets but never saw any in stores. Where do you get them? I had a guy tell me at the feed store about those beets a few years back i didnt think to ask him where he got them. Do ou think they may eat regular beets and turnips?

I don't know about the beets, but the turnips they will hammer after the first frost. And when it gets really cold they dig the root up and eat them.

I just ask cause i got easy access to beets and turnips so I could get them. I tell you if the vines grew in the winter one thing that you can plant and I guarantee the deer will come. SWEET POTATO VINES... lol I had to install a light that flashes to keep them out my sweet tater patch lol

I want to plant some winter oats as well. I also plan on doing cinnamon clover I will prob plant some this weekend then. I also was thinking about broadcasting some rye with the clover then lightly disc it all in for a pasture. I have another plot I will go check this weekend that I planted a few weeks ago and posted about with ladino and kale. I saw buck oats in the feed store didnt look at it close but I wonder if thats the same as winter oats.

Probably same as what some call "race horse oats". Not seed oats but make just about as good a patch of oats for deer and half the price.

Oh ok makes sense.

during my weekly supply visit to southern states I found oats 17 bucks a 50lb bag I bought 2 bags to try it out. I was shocked

I bought another bag of the food plot mix here is the label

that should make an excellent cover and wildlife plot.

I am running a Multi species Cover Crop project. When I started the project I could not find a seed company in Virginia who would mix seed for me....

This fall there are at least four new cover crop seed vendors including Southern States that would not talk to me a year ago....

I take it as a testament to how much cover crop awareness has been raised...

WOW... thats crazy yea I think there has been alot of awareness raised on cover crops up here in our area.

Just a note to let those of you who have them……..

This years cover crops mix is pretty good eating.

Not all of them of course but some…..

I was looking at the stand in my bull pasture….this is the pasture most often shown in my blog….. www.pdfangus.com

Anyhow….I was looking at them and thinking which is dangerous for me…..

I grabbed a Walmart bag and went out there and starting picking leaves…..

I had plenty so I just picked a leaf or two from many plants…..

Forage Mustard
Tillage Radish
Dwarf Essex Rape….

Took it in the house and my wife washed it and cooked it up with some bacon….

I had it for supper last night….

Made the mistake of telling Marie what it was and she thought it was a little tough…..

To me it was no tougher than canned spinach or kale and it was better tasting…..

Don't know if I will leave any for the cattle or not…..

But I am putting turnips with my plot again next year…..We will leave them out of the mix though….

We left the turnips out this year mix because turnips the size of grapefruits were causing problems with the precision no till planters of today….

Also saw my first phacelia plant in my plot…it is a real lacy looking fine leaf plant….

I discovered too late that it probably should have been in the summer mix as it frost kills at 18 degrees so we probably won't see much of it flower….this is about the same temperature as it takes to frost kill the tillage radish….I am told that two nights of 17 or below will kill the radish….Jim Clays Radishes survived last year so maybe he will have some phacelia survive this year.

wow ... lol I got to much salad to pick the cover crop salad. I would plant turnips but i would broadcast them with the shoulder spreader then lightly disc them in thats what I do for turnips in the garden and they come up fine even with a inch or 2 of dirt on them. I can snap a pic for you if you want.
