ordering straws from large suppliers

Have always used a bull and only one time I bought straws privately from someone that already had them at a storage facility. However, when buying from big suppliers (like ABS, etc), what is the typical shipping cost and associated arrangements? I assume they ship directly to your storage facility, but not sure exactly how it works.

I order from the local rep from ABS, GENEX, Acelerated and Select Sires and never had t pay shipping. The rep just puts them in my tank

Our ABS/Genex rep brings the semen we order and puts it in our tank. When I order semen from another source (or embryos), I have it shipped or arrange to pick it up (like at Farm Fest or breed sales or shows). Shipping usually cost around $100, but I have my own shipper. Most larger places have a shipper that they will charge with Nitrogen and ship your order, you just have to send it back. But never seen it under $100 for shipping.

Contact the different companies and ask. Liquid nitrogen is considered a hazardous material and that is why shipping is so high. When we have had it shipped, it comes to our home via UPS or FedEx.

You may have an ABS http://www.absglobal.com/ or Select Sires http://www.selectsiresbeef.com/ representative in your area and you can either pick it up or have it delivered.

We buy our semen from Bovine Elite http://www.bovine-elite.com/home.asp and pick it up ourselves.

Some places have a minimum order too.

Three of my favorite people on this earth are customers that had been paying shipping cost on semen for years... One day our beef manager called and asked me if he could add their orders to my shipment and have me meet them somewhere as they'd never dealt with ABS face to face... I've been delivering to all three for years for free and I look forward to their calls every year. Find out who is strong in your area and call them instead of dealing with customer service. Let the local guy treat you right.
