How long would it take before I could cut oats for hay if I planted now (Aug. 10) ? Assuming we get normal rainfall, would I still have a chance to make some good hay? I live in Cent.Mn . Thanks Dan

I dont think you have any chance of making hay this year. I do plant some wheat or rye around September 1 and graze it a little and then just let it go to hay next year. Wheat does not winter kill as easy.

You will have a hard time making dry hay. No issues getting a cut of green feed off in 6-8 weeks, but you will need to handle it as baleage or silage somehow. We don't get the drying weather this late in the year to make dry oat hay viable in the fall.
