nurse cow and calves

I have a jersey/holestein 1st calf heifer. Im new to having a nurse cow. My question is, am i able to turnout the cow with the calves or do they need to be seperated until time of feeding. And if i have them turned out with them, what problems could arise from it.

I have done it both ways. I have kept the calves in the barn and turned the cow in and out and this usually works better with a heifer if your putting 2 or more calves on her.
