Hello all...just wanted to get opinions or answer to what happened recently.
I had a newborn calf-large about 90lbs for our herd- that I found right after birth. While applying iodine to the umbilical cord while calf still laying I notice some blood. Mother had not finished cleaning off so I backed off and watched. Mother worked on calf but after a while layed down beside calf. I suspected a hard labor and she was tired. Calf made very little effort to get to his feet so I went back and tried to help him get up. When I got him to stand while bracing against my leg I saw blood streaming from the navel...falling from strands of hair in about 4-5 streams. Applied more iodine and when I moved of course he went back down. Other attempts to stop bleeding--pressure with rag at navel to clot and stop bleed powder were unsuccessful. Of course you can figure the outcome.
I had never had this happen with a newborn, just asking if you had and was there anything else I should have done? I figure either the cow had either fell on the calf, stepped on his abdomen, or the umbilical cord had torn something in his interior. The cow was not real agile from the hard labor but no long term effect. Your thoughts or experiences please.
