Maverick cattle

Help Support CattleToday:

The term Maverick came from back in the old post civil war days when many calves weren't branded. A man whose last name was Maverick started roping and putting his brand brand on these unbranded calves and or yrlg or any other cattle that weren't branded so therefore had no legal owner.
When he put his brand on them they were legally his..

This is the way he started his herd and so the term "Maverick"stuck, for any unbranded cattle with no legal owner.
