Longhorn grazing question

Help Support CattleToday:

Even though Longhorns will "eat most anything", they (like other cattle) will eat all the good stuff first and then when there's nothing left to eat and they are very hungry and losing condition, then they will eat the bad stuff.

On the other hand, Longhorns will eat "some" weeds about as readily as regular grass.

Just remember, "You can't starve a profit out of (any) animal"!

They will eat it when there's little or nothing else to eat but they need other nourishment as well. As RAB said, don't expect them to flourish on it.

There is plenty of good grass, here on the farm. Not expecting to graze broomsedge for a source of forage. Just trying to find out if longhorns would be an aid to help control broomsedge on years that it doesnlt get limed.

Like RAB said, they will eat the good stuff first and work their way down to other things.

Because of the drought, we're experiencing, my cattle have cleaned up all the cattail around the pond, all the thistles, and have started on the young ironweed.

You know, you Longhorn folks are the most honest people there are on these threads.

Nobody has ever doubted their class, integrity, or their overall good character, we just wish that while they were measuring horn lengths they would take some ribeye area ultrasounds.

Thank you on behalf of the Longhorn Breeders! Appreciate it!

On a sidebar:

While some individuals may criticize or make fun of peoples' "marketing" activities, I would add that since we're right on US 83 (Canada to Mexico highway) with lots of daily traffic, our place is kept up nicely and always have one group in area next to highway. Our "ranch" entry sign is for advertising as well as to make it easy for people to find us. In regard to websites, about 75 % of our sales are due to website exposure since the Longhorn market (yes a nitch) attracts customers on a nationwide basis (our local sales are few and far between). We also try to update our website with something every week or two...do it ourselves, don't have to wait on a "webmaster" service to get around to it.

Additionally...I feel we have nothing to hide. Our Longhorn records are available for any prospective customer to see; and, they get full data printouts of each animal with a purchase. To attempt to deceive someone would "shoot ourselves in the foot" to say the least....
