Keeping Bull Alone...

Help Support CattleToday:

I'm getting a weaned bull this fall that I'll use on my small herd next spring/summer. Can I leave him in there with the cows through the spring? I'd like to use him for more than on year so I can get my money's worth out of him and not slaughter him.

Thanks

Weaned as in he was just born this year and will not even be a year old yet? If so you really should have him in his own pen and feed him properly so he develops and grows to a reasonable weight. Preferably you would want a bull to be at least 14 months old before you turn him out with cows however, most bulls are producing semen by 10-12 months of age but the challenge would be is he going to be big enough to even be able to reach a mature cow to breed.
