Woke up to a Hung calf this morning. Honestly took one look and thought it was to late. Got it pulled and to our amazement it survived though extremely stressed and tongue hanging out 5 or more inches. Paired right up with mom and with the exception of his tongue all seems normal. Several hours have past and it is still hanging way out. He has been on her teats a good part of the day but I am unsure if he is able to suckle with the tongue the way it is. I would prefer to leave him with her if possible. Is there anyway to determine whether or not he is getting anything.

Sometimes these calves figure it out, sometimes not. If you're not sure, it would be a good idea to get some colostrum in him. After a day or so his tongue should go back down to normal and he should be good to go.

Did you get colostrum in him, have you been feeding him....is he still alive? No they can't nurse with the tongue out. Sometimes if you HELP them nurse by holding
the tongue in place as he nurses, he will in a few days be able to control the tongue well enough to nurse, but it takes patience, helping him nurse twice a day.
