how to tell cows age by teeth

Help Support CattleToday:

In most sale barns they use this classification, atleast around here...

Heifers 2-4 YO
Solid mouth 4-7 YO
spread mouth7-8YO
broken mouth 8-10 YO
smooth mouth10+ YO

when you haul a bred cow to a sale they will age her with a quick check to her lower incisors, her upper front mouth is a dental pad.

Someone might be able to fill in the ages for the classifications, I cant remember off the top of my head and those probably are not right.

After all of the adult teeth are in the wear of the teeth makes age determination a lot harder. Genetics, forage type and soil type of grazing areas can really affect the wear.

You hit the nail on the head about grazing manage your pastures manage your cows teeth.
I have got some old enough to vote. Good grass= Good Teeth= Saving money.

I have kept a couple until 19 and one until 21 but you have to be careful trying this.

I checked Ol Grannys teeth saturday. She's only 18 but her teeth are all still solid. You can;t see them looking from the front but they're all there when you look straight down on them from the top.

I look at the number of fillings. The more fillings they have the older they are, usually. ;-)

Not really if you have good pasture management. Life gets a lot simpler when you figure out you are a grass farmer.

My Daddy used to say " if they don't take care of there teeth then you know they don't take care of there kitty"

All the salesbarns around here use as age the number of years 1-7 then after 7 is short solid until the cow loses a tooth and then she is broken mouth for the rest of her life. A cow labeled 6 or older can be any age, it all depends on how her pasture has been. If she eats on close grazed, rocky pastures, she might be a broken mouth when she is 6. If she is in rockless bottom land with good grass, she might be 15 and still be judged as short solid. It all depends on her care. With experienced cattlemen, they can be just about as good by looking at the animal as the guy who mouths the cow. Those are good websites that you guys posted to learn about aging by teeth, thanks.

I am hauling to the salebarn Sat morning for one of the neighbors and I have one that needs to go.
One we are hauling from him is 26 with a three week old calf and she is still short and solid.
She prolapsed on this calf we have her healed enough to go to slaughter.
Thats is what good pasture management can do, that old girl was a money maker.
