LRTX, do you have a planner that wide? Nice table. I just found a saw mill close to home and I have many fairly large cedar trees that I would like to get milled. Maybe a project in cedar in the future.

No, I final planed it in 2 halves then glued it together. There was a lot of jointing and planing before I got to that part though. 34 individual boards in it.

MIght sound a bit strange but I like to just get in the truck and go riding back roads. Stay lost most of the time after a few miles but gotta hit pavement sooner or later. Can come across some beautiful country doing it.

My parents used to drag me along doing this quite a bit as a kid. We were living in Illinois at the time. I got to see some really cool things. Buffalo Bill Cody and Herbert Hoover's birthplace. I still love the site of about 1,000 acres of corn going by at 65. This was back in the 80's so I either had to read or look out the window. I did my fair bit of reading, but watching the world go by was really cool, too.

As a full-time farmer, time is a precious commodity that I don't really have a lot of. When I'm not messing with the cattle, hay, or melons, I really enjoy spending time with family and especially my Grand Babies! I do enjoy deer and pheasant hunting (I go to South Dakota every year to chase the birds) as well as working with my horses when time allows. I am also the Associate Pastor at our local church and that keeps me busy at times as well!

We used to be big into cars--Pontiac Fieros mostly. Had 5 of them at one time a few years ago, but sold the last one last year when it just got too hard for me to get in and out of them. You know you're a car guy, when you're getting ready for a car show and your living room looks like this:

Here lately, not much. Got into building whirlygigs for a while, and since my 2 surgeries (2 since last Sept--one last week) not much at all other than a few bird houses.

greybeard... I was big into Rx7's... I think I had a total of 14 of them at one point in time.. still have one old wreck I was going to build an ice racer out of... Has a brand new engine, supercharged, figured 250 hp was a reasonable figure, but local ice races were cancelled the year I built the car, so it's been pretty much parked since.

I picked up a pair of midget sprint cars for $500.. might make a dune buggy out of one of them, either that or a drag car.

Me too. I've been buidling them out of junk iron. They scare the birds out of my berries. Some.

I need more. Building them is not a hobby. Just something I did out of necessity.

My main hobby appears to be wasting (oops, I mean spending) time on CT. :D
I like to hike and get out into wilderness for at least a couple weeks every year or I go nuts.
I serve with a local nonprofit group trying to clean up (demolish or repair) the dilapidated houses and buildings that plague our otherwise-gorgeous area.
I'm taking a break from it right now but have spent 20 years or so as a volunteer advocate for children who are abused/neglected.
I'd like to say I'm learning to play guitar but it's more like I feel guilty that my guitar (b-day present from spouse a year ago) is sitting in the corner looking at me reproachfully.
Am (excruciatingly slowly) rehabbing a house for rental and I usually take 1 class each semester (usually science-related) just to keep the brain working.
Then there's the job that pays the bills, and the cows that spend the above.

Something like CASA? Great organization, heartbreaking situations, the volunteers are amazing.

My intention in retirement was to get into model engineering making stationary steam engines and the like. I have all the gear a lathe and mill and the rest but the cows have ended up as a full time hobby with no regrets so I don't have time for model making. My machinery does not go to waste as I am always machining something to repair things that break. At the moment I have a lump of steel in the lathe chuck that I am in the process of making a smaller V belt pulley for my irrigation pump so I can get a few more herbs out of it so really I get to satisfy both my hobbies.

One thing I've learned with my job is people like talking about themselves and I'm not any different


I like to fish, kayak, camp and sleep under the stars when I can, shoot trap some, hunt a little, mostly anything outdoors, but cooking out and cold beer seems my biggest hobby now days.
I like to buy undervalued, neglected or abused property that needs a little rest, cleaned up and fixed up but when I get them the way I like them I get bored and sell them and buy another.
I've always been passionate about the cattle business, but mostly because it goes along with the land, nature and the outdoors. I've never got the attachment to cattle like a pet, but it sure upsets me to see one abused.
I really enjoy working cattle horseback like we did growing up (working for someone else, we didn't own them)
I've never had a place really big enough really to work horseback.
Biggest place I've had was 1200 acres and most places have been around 320 acres or so . It takes longer to saddle a horse than it does to ride across it.
I've never been one to try and build/breed a better cow, but I've spent a lifetime trying to build better places to raise cattle.
I'm a big time grass, forage and numbers guy. I've spend countless hours trying to make a cattle operation more profitable and maximize cattle per acre and profit per acre, but the biggest lesson I've learned is you can't beat Mother Nature and you have to play by her rules.

Cross7, you're totally right about not being able to beat mother nature.. she drives a hard bargain... I think you should get at least ONE real pet cow. I don't recommend a whole herd of them though, I get mobbed anytime I go see them.

You can beat Mother nature for awhile--after all, you are part of nature too, but when she's had enough, she calls out her old man Father Time and they join up and both put a whuppin on you ya won't forget.

I like taking photos sometimes I get paid sometimes just for fun. I love messing with wildlife have volunteered on a few trapping and tagging expeditions. I haven't done it in awhile but loved handing my friends snakes at his snake farm. I love my cattle and like going to sales even if I am not buying. I like to fish and hunt some. I am addicted to football watch a lot of college and pro and hang out with a friend who scouts HS kids.

And of course my cattle.
My favorite pastime though is to get a good sized chicken snake and put it in a new Nike shoebox. Then we drive up to the north side of Killeen there around MLK Blvd . And set it on a bench at the bus stop. Sit back and watch. Funny as he'll seeing them snakes get the shyt scared out of em.... ;-)

I'm a residential contractor. It buys the groceries. Have several rental properties that I hope will offer me some retirement benefits in the future. I'm a Certified Real Estate Appraiser, but I rarely practice anymore. Serve as a supervisor for my local Soil and Water Conservation District. I grow and sell hay. And all of these raise my kids and help fund my addiction to raising calves. I sure enjoy calving season, even though it can be work at times. Would love to fool with cattle full time, but I don't see it happening anytime soon. Also enjoy hunting and fishing with my kids when we have time.
