I picked up a couple of inexpensive Highlander steers for freezer beef. I hope to grass finish them. I noticed in other posting that folks bragged up the meat quality, but said Highlanders gained slower and finished ligher that English breeds. What are some reasonable average gain per day and finishing weight targets?

(My Angus/Hereford steers gain 1.8 to 2.0 lbs per day on a grass/legume mix.)

They are pretty slow finishing in my experience. I have a steer who would be 24 months who is finally getting close. That's on straight grass. Usually after slaughter and scraps you can expect about 350-400 lbs of meat.

Grass fed Highlands are better if you killem on the gain...spring or early summer grass, I prefer to butcher in the fall, so I finish mine on haylage and c.o.b.

Finish em right...Highland is some of the best beef there is!
IMHO
