Let me go into depth to explain what I meant..It is fairly easy to find a homo black bull that will throw nothing but black calves..Now getting a complete set of tested homo black cows to make sure all the calves out of a hereford bull is not so simple and a waste of time and money..

Now that makes sense.

This whole thread illustrates the absurdity of cattle bringing more money because they have a black hide. The same cow and bull could produce either red or black baldies from year to year, yet the black baldies would bring more even though the parents were the same. Just because they can.

Just grow good calves - heck with the colour. Sooner or later someone will buy them.

Myersfarm John,
Here's a Manitoba website with market archives. Prices tend to vary from province to province (and distance from the big feedlots and packers), but it may give you an idea of how the market slumped.

This is a very informative link from Canfax with graphs that show the prices with five year average up to Sept. 2004 on Feeder cattle.

Same as above except information is compiled with data for Slaughter cattle and period ends at Mar.11/05.

Below is a link to NBI Clyde, Alberta. Their market report pretty much reflects what the prices are at in Alberta and our area of BC (although locally you'll probably be about 0.10 back for the trucking).

Back to the original topic, cross them whichever way you personally prefer. You may as well enjoy the 'look' of the cattle you're raising, as over the years you'll be doing a lot of looking at them. ;-)

Take care and best of luck.
