Howdy all!

Can y'all help identify this grass that is prevalent on our property up in North Texas?

Looks similar to what I would call Downy Brome which I'm pretty sure is Cheatgrass by a different name. You're looks big though, Ours is mainly early spring, in the road ditches and edges of fields. Use your google machine and see what you think.

You are quite a ways south of me, so that's just a guess. Good luck.

I thought that was a possibility. But the seed pods are a lot shorter on our grass. It also looks a bit like western wheatgrass but also same issue. Also thought it might be Rescuegrass

I would say you were right. That's what we call rescue grass.

Best I can tell I'll agree wit rescue grass...definitely not that thick here.

I see you have that little purple flower too...

Rescue grass is correct I believe. That thick only in the ditches around here. Not considered a great cattle grass but they eat it pretty good when its young and tender.

It gets its name for reliably coming up early in the spring before most other grasses even in drought conditions. It will "rescue" you when you are short of hay.

My guess is some type of Buffalo Grass. Here's a blurb on some from an Okie: https://oklahoman.com/article/5659525/nature-you-buffalo-grass-never-needs-mowing

Maybe I'm wrong, wouldn't be the first time.

Rescue and cheat

Based on that photo I would say it's rescue. I finally took a closeup and it's a lot more like your rescue pic
