Stoved my hand up pretty good 2 days ago trying to catch a loose piglet. Smashed a 2x6 with a half closed fist. I was trying to catch the pigs leg as he ran by. It's all swelled up, and I can't open or close it all the way. Had to work this morning, and squeezing a 4k pressure washing gun for 3 hours like this wasn't no fun. At what point would you consider getting it looked at? I'm thinking tomorrow after work if the swelling isn't down

Is it only swollen in the palm or is it everywhere? From my experience when just the palm swells you have a boxers fracture or break in the outside bone, the one inline with your pinky. Not a lot they will do for that one. When the whole hand swells you did something else.

If you can move your fingers and move your hand and there is no bone sticking out I'd just favor it and maybe soak in salt water to reduce swelling. X-ray will tell you what it is but I think you'll find the treatment is the same. Immobilize it as much as possible and save your money.

Lottery: everyone spots $5 and says fractured ot bruised. Winners split the jackpot. First year I started developing my farm, I was sawing a log. It started to roll. I reached to stop it. Jamed the middle finger. It swelled. I never felt like it was hurt too bad. A nurse friend told me to have it x-rayed. It was fractured. I was then scheduled to see a specialist. He said a splint was not recommended as the finger would always remain stiff. Suggested that I continue to use it lightly. Joe is right. I did spend my deductible and did not need treatment. I would have it checked. Hands are important. Especially for us men who don't get any affection!!

Pretty well sums up my opinion too

Give it a redneck Xray. Take the brightest flashlight/spotlight you have, put the hand over it in the dark. Works great for fingers but as thick as that hand is, you still might not be able to see the bones.

I'm on the side of go get it looked at. Know someone who had a break that didn't heal right and it bothered them the rest of their life. Your hand is very important, do all you can for it.

Xray won't make it heal any faster. I use a block of wood in the trigger of my pressure washer for normal operation anyway. I sympathise with you Hook I worked for myself and had to battle on with broken bones on a couple of occaisions. Few people care they just want the job done anyway.

Get it looked at. The breaks that I've had in my hands and feet that swell that bad involve dislocations as well and they won't heal until they get set right.

I wish I had taken better care of my hands over the years. I have broken all 8 of my fingers and several of those more than once. I taped it up and went on. I have broken 2 or 3 metacarpals in my right hand as well. Now I have arthritis in my fingers. They get stiff and hurt especially in the winter. Delicate stuff like nuts and bolts give me fits.
