Hi all- looking for some thoughts on gate placement for a friend. Situation looks like this:

Calving season starts about mid-February and there's snow on the ground so taking out walls isn't going to be an option. Openings between the barn and calving pen are maybe 6-8' wide. Cattle need to be able to go from the calving pen to 'pen 1' - what's the best way to design the gate placement to allow this? They do not need to go to the right between barn and calving pen.

Any and all thoughts appreciated.

1 gate on the barn that is wide enough to form a chute across the open area and 1 on the pen wide enough to form the other side of the chute.

On the calving pen hang the gate on the right side, and on the barn hang the gate on the left side.
Swing the CP pen out to go to pen 1 or swing both gates out to make a connecting ally from CP and Barn.

There's a medina hinge going in on the right. That's where you don't want them? Gate out of calving pen swings on right post. Can swing past barn. End of right alley is boxed. Medina hinge gate comes back to pen gate. Also isolates alley to the right if need be.

Gate on pen 1. Medina gate can close off barn.

You can pull calves if you have to. Isolate in alley isolate pen 1, calving pen, or barn.

Need more info - Is that barn closed off normally? Does anything need to remain open?

But in general use Double acting hinged gates. You would have to play with the measurements to make it work correctly. But basically it would look like this :

Or

Where C to D is long enough to span, but short enough sections to clear the barn gate back to B and The barn gate can be swung to meet A to C while clearing corner D - *the gates hinge again within their own length, they aren't bent like that*

How about double gates on the barn and calving pen so that you configure and make it possible to go any direction. Also a gate on the end of the barn at pen 1. Also gives the option of creating a small holding pen in the alley between the barn and calving pen.
