The neighbor has a first calf heifer, part beef part Holstein that calved last week, the calf was dead, and she has been unable to get up since. This is what the owner thought, front leg paralysis, but the odd thing is that it lays on its side only, when it is propped up, it can not stay in a sitting position. Then as it lays on its side, it does move its back and front legs. Any ideas other than paralysis?

She has given it, Dex and Banamine so far.

Thanks

Gail

Probably paralysis in the rear legs. How big was the calf? Did it have to be pulled? Just because she can move her legs with the weight off doesn't mean she can with the weight on.

When hip lifted she can put weight on her back legs, but not her front. I just think it is real odd that she can not sit in a sitting position.

i would call the vet for his opinion and then do what has to be done . If it hasn't been able to get up in a weeks time with the help it's been getting it may not.
