Does anyone know of any references describing the effects of systemic antibiotics (i.e. those administered either IM or SubQ)
on rumen function and or gut motility in cattle???

Thanks

No, but I have killed one before by using too many. Nuflor, LA-200, and Excede in that order. It was a Catch 22. Kill the bacteria or let it kill him. After I killed the respiratory bug I spent 2 weeks working on his killed rumen (including a transfaunation) before he died.

Antibiotics are not selective - they kill everything. The longer the animal is on antibiotics, the more damage is done to their rumen and flora. To avoid this problem simply give probiotics (Probios) to repopulate the gut and the flora. The probiotics should be given for a few days after the antibiotics have finished to make sure the gut is properly repopulated.
