We have a two and a half week old dairy calf that we are bottle feeding. He takes two bottles a day, but still seems to be hungry. We has calf starter and water in front of him at all times, but doesn't seem to eat much of it, unless we feed it to him by hand. Is this normal?

: Julie: Your calf sounds very normal.Be cautious about increasing milk. You can slowly increase the milk some , but not more than 3 quarts twice daily. He will start to eat more dry feed as he matures. At about 4 weeks skip his milk for a feeding every third day. Some soft grass hay and clean fresh water will help too.Larry
Is this normal?
We have raised 12 dairy calves from 1 to 3 days old to start. I read somewhere that it is the sucking (nursing) which stimulates the ruminates in the stomac of a young calf. We tried bucket feeding on 3 or 4 and found they did not have the same daily weight gains as the bottle fed ones even though the other circumstances were the same. I suggest you bottle feed, it's a pain but you will notice a healthly and faster growing calf.
