I have a couple of dairy beef steers I am going to raise. My question is will I get docked at the sale barn for having cross steers (brown swiss/holstein) vs. pure holstein or will pricing differences be strictly due to the size, confirmation, etc. of the animal.

I have a dairy very close that I can get either kind from and I plan to buy more before I sell the first two to find out. I appreciate the help.

I realize I will already receive a lower price than for beef breeds.

In the past, the Swiss calves bring a little more then Holsteins. I think that's mostly a muscle deal.

From my experience holestiens will finish out fast than that of a swiss. Swiss may bring a better price, but the holsteins go to market a lot sooner. Had experience with brown swiss and when it came to weening time it was hard to get them to take to feed and water on their own. Everyone around our neighbor hood say they are not the smartest breed and would rather starve to death than eat on their own. Just my opinion. I would go with the holstiens.
