Are any of you in a position to benefit from the release of CRP acres for haying or grazing? See the story on the front page of CT.
There aren't many CRP acres around here, that I know, and such acres generally have pretty low quality forages. Especially if you wait until the quail are done nesting. I think this is a non-event for cattlemen.

I potentially am. There are a few acres of CRP in the area, but most have been taken out in the last 5 years in favor of corn/beans. I have an elderly lady I do lawn maintenance for, and she has about 500 acres of CRP. There may be a possibility there. I believe we have to wait past July 15 to mow for hay. It is smooth bromegrass, so the quality would be pretty low at that point. CP would prolly be around 6%. However, it could be good "filler" hay in Dec-Jan if given with a protein supplement. About 1lb of protein in the form of alfalfa hay and CRP hay. Sounds like a ration to me.
