cows wearing vests

Hi,

We took a country ride thru western Connecticut and New York State. We had to turn around to go back and look at a small herd because they had the strangest markings. Upon closer inspection they were back cows (or cattle?) with off white man made vests around their torsos. Could someone please tell us why the cows are wearing canvas like vests? We noticed this in both states.

> They were probably Belted Galloways- a breed of cattle that has a very distinctive white 'belt' around their middles. Viewed from some distance, would give the impression of 'wearing vests'.

Thanks Monty. My written description does match the "Beltie". I need to add that a rectangle, with perfect right angles, is "cut out" of the back of the "belt" (or vest).

Any other ideas?

If it was at the rear I would be tempted to think it was a Tamm udder support. Maybe they just like to play dress-up with their cows
