So I've been in the market for a new red angus bull. Having hard time pulling that trigger, ones I've wanted at the Mushrush and Pharo sales were 7500-10k.
Guy I've been buying bulls from ask why not just AI 5of my best cows to red angus and make my own. So I've started looking into that and now I'm signing up for a local class by a highly renowned AI/embryo guy. Is this worth it? Class is $1200

Seems awful high priced. I did the 3-day school with these guys a few years ago. https://7triangle7.com/trainingclinics

Maybe?
My best friend is really good at AI. I can Preg check but can't AI. He told me that in 30 minutes with a repo track from the local butcher he could teach me how to do it.
Maybe find someone who Al's who is willing to teach you?

My 12 year old son wants to learn. I found some Hereford semen on SireBuyer for like $4/straw. ( really old genetics) I figure for that price he could breed the cows twice and if they don't stick we're really not out much.

Is there anyone close that can do the breeding for you??? AI tech from one of the bull stud companies???? Purebred breeder that you could pay to do it...??? Even a dairy closeby that breeds AI that could store the semen and bred them?
The reason why I ask is that with all the things needed: tank, regular nitrogen fills, breeding gun, sleeves, etc... plus semen... for only 5 or 10 cows it is just not worth the expense... Plus, an experienced tech will get more pregnancies just because they are more experienced..

Now, I am not saying it is not worth it... and breeding your own gives you some options in bull selection that you might never have any other way...

But, what about this AI/embryo guy? I would rather pay someone to maybe do some synchronization and get them to come and breed them .... I'd set up 5-10 cows, get them synched to come in heat and bred at the same time... should get 30-70 % settled ....if all goes well it should be 50% or more... and get your calves that way. The bull studs have "sexed semen" for bull calves or heifer calves in many breeds... you could see if you could get bull sexed semen and then get mostly all bull calves...

I have my own tank and have done a fair amount over the years. Hope to get back to doing more again this year... now that my knees are replaced and I am getting around better... but I also did relief breeding for years for our Select Sires representative part-time... It costs $40 or so to have the tank "recharged" with nitrogen refill every 3 months... to just sit there... but if it runs out, the semen is ruined...

So I plan to leave working for the Postal Service in 1-2yrs once I get my 20 in, which is June2026. I'll only be 41 so I still need employment but am contemplating working for myself some. As you mentioned I'd like to hire the Ai done but I've found 1 place that will do it which is the same vet that's teaching this class. I set them up and haul them to him, their Ai'd and haul them home. I'm not huge fan because I know getting them worked up doesn't help conception. But it the only option I find. Not sure I want to be really full time Ai tech but if I could make few bucks here and there.
As for the tank etc, figure to buy enough semen for the season and waste what I don't use. Cost 175-200 to ship it, not much different to keep up a tank for the year. If I'm doing it on regular basis those supplies cost will have to be figured in.
So no there really aren't anyone to pay to do it. A few guys I know Ai but none really have the time to teach it

Yes I agree it does sound a bit high. I do know this guy is very well known in the Ai world etc, gets flown all over the place to do fancy stuff etc. Selling point to this particular class is location. It's 20mins from me. So fuel, hotel, food etc is nothing.so I figure I'd spend the other $500 in hotels and travel expense. Next closest school is 3 hrs away.
They do teach you to preg check etc. It's a 4day class 9-5pm. Plus I ask to Ai my own cows on day 4, said he'd love to do that. Set em up and time it to have the ready. This class falls into my already scheduled vacation, kids still in school etc.

I agree it does seem high. I paid 500 for the preg test class. It would have been a couple hundred more to add the ai portion. I would go with it if I didn't have to travel and get my cows done, too. I think the cost of the tech, school, travel, etc. may come close to the 1200. I'd haul as many as they let you ai over there that last day 😃

You can't beat the location being 20 minutes away and no travel costs.

There's so much more to it than just the class. I like the idea of having that ability in my toolbox. That said, I've taken the class twice, from two different but reputable instructors. Both taught really well and the cost was roughly $800 each time. They taught AI and preg. Determination. After the class, don't expect to feel confident or be proficient enough to jump in and AI for yourself much less other people. You will learn the anatomy and process, but until you have passed a straw on, I'd venture to say, 100's of cows, you will not be confident or able to breed your own or others' cows consistently. They can teach the process and help you feel the process, but they cannot make you an overnight breeder.
Get out of the class and you'll have to continue to practice on live cows to get that feel. But maybe even more important than that "feel", is proper semen handling and storage. There is a very specific process to removing, thawing, loading semen that takes a lot of repetition to master.
All I say is don't expect to finish the class on Friday and breed your cows on Monday. Have a follow up plan to get your arm in a lot of cattle and pass some straws. And after you've mastered that there's the heat detection or sync protocols to master. Knowing how is worthless if it's not done at the right time.
But you know who is a master at the whole process? A bull! 😬

X10000. My wife has taken 2 classes and bred a fair number of our cows over the years. But she will be the first to say she isn't always confident and when people ask her to do it she says no. While every cows anatomy is the same the "feel" of things can be quite different. The first few years at it our AI success rate was quite low.

The only way to get good and proficient at it is to breed as many cows as you can and learn from each and every one. But learning on paying customers cows isn't always advisable.

I have bred 50 or so cows a year starting in spring 2021. I am slow at it, but patient. There are always a couple cows every year that I cannot get done and they are not the same cows from year to year. The first year was a little concerning, but my neighbor was backing me up and getting the tough ones done. Generally 65-75% success rate.

veterinarian 42 yrs experience many cows ai, how about another idea>
consider offering the ai school your cows ready to breed,, or consider a "second school" for a few more dollars to supervise your attempts,
could get the school free for bringing your cows,
bring your own cows to the school chute, ai them yourself while instructor helps you.

I am betting you can get an AI tech to come do it for a lot less than $1200. Unless you are planning on being an AI tech yourself one day, doing 5 or so a year won't be enough to ever get you proficient at it. Every year would be like starting over.

Are you syncing your cows and doing all at once? Or detecting heat and breeding one at a time? They say that heat detection has a much higher success rate. 65-75% is outstanding success, for anybody.

It costs $40 or so to have the tank "recharged" with nitrogen refill every 3 months... to just sit there... but if it runs out, the semen is ruined...
A bull eats $40 in feed every two weeks... costs way more than $1200 up front... just sits there most of the year... and can up and die any time

I'd check the ag extensions and local universities though, I would think you can find a course cheaper than $1200.

I sync them with 7-day CIDR and heat detect. Breed a.m. and p.m. and sometimes at noon. I wait til they are not standing or riding before I will a.i. one.

I won't breed anyone else's cows. Behind my own cows in my own facilities I feel very comfortable doing it but go to someone else's place and I feel lost behind their cows.

Well in the end my own cows is all I will likely do. But I'm trying to have enough skills to have options. I see what you all are saying about needing a lot of practice, and my guess is continuing that practice. Most things if you get out of practice are tough to just pick straight back up. I paid the deposit and as I said, already off work so I'm in. Plus going to be breeding my own with vets help is big plus. Planing to do 6 but I will be asking if they'd like few extras. Trailer will hold 10…….

I would take as many as you can. Just that much more experience. Use it while you got it 🤷‍♂️
