The oil filters seem to keep getting smaller. Now they are about the size of the filter on da wife's 2 cylinder yard tractor. How can these compare with much bigger ones in the past?

If it is like here they are getting smaller and a lot more expensive. Our Holden Colorado 4 cyl diesel has gone back to the cartridge type rather than a spin on and was about $90.

Engines run way cleaner than they used to. Less debris in the oil to clean out.

Ya. The little filters are the same price as big ones here, but you can upgrade to a premium for about 3x the price.

Do you buy into the 10,000 or 20,000 mile filters?

Heck no. In optimal conditions, you might be able to run 10,000 miles on one change, with good synthetic oil and filter.

A lot of engines have been ruined from those intervals. The manufacturers recommend them for a best case scenario, when our daily routines are actually closer to the severe duty interval.

Cleaner fuels, better high temperature tolerance of engine oils translates to fewer emissions to clog filters.......and that's with normal service change intervals of 7500 vs 3000 miles......and while we are at it, AT and differential fluid changes of 100k miles recommended.
