Same breed

Welcome to the American British White Park Association web site. Our site contains information on our breed of cattle, association and our members. We hope you enjoy it.

This is a new association formed to unite the breeders of American White Park and British White cattle. These two breeds are actually the same breed under different names. Many of the cattle come from the same bloodlines and are not to be confused with the horned Ancient White Parks. This new organization does not register horned animals. The breeders of American British White Park cattle have put forth much effort to build a breed of the highest quality possible.

There is some confusion about this breed as there are 2 associations because of a split many years ago. It is my understanding that the American British White Parks and the British Whites are really the same and many are from the same lines. The cattle from both of these associations are not to be confused with the Ancient Horned White Parks. There are very few of those here in America. American British White Parks are extremely easy to handle and have high weight gains from birth to finish just on pasture without any expensive creep feeding. This breed is very versatile and can be used to create any characteristics desireable to you thru cross breeding. They are very gentle and maternal. Calving problems and respiratory problems are practically unheard of in this breed. Very good carcass results which can be obtained at the http://www.whitecattle.org website. We went with the ABWP breeders for our cattle as the costs to get started were lower and the breeders treated us well. I'm not sure of the website address for the British Whites but I think it's already been posted. All in all, a very cost effective, well dispositioned all around breed regardless of which association you use. Hope this helps. Thanks, Sylvanglades Farm

just a thought. cattle are herd animals and do not like being alone on a new place. if possible, buy at least 2 to start with or you will be searching for an escaped animal and/or repairing fences.
good luck and have fun.

Congratulations mountainboy on fullfilling your dream to have a farm! Like you, having a farm was our dream that finally came true about 4 years ago. I agree with T-Bro that if possible, it's a good idea to start with 2 bred heifers as this breed especially likes to have company. I say heifers as they are most affordable even though first time heifers require some watching. I noticed you had mentioned british whites but since noone has answered, I thought I'd let you know that there are American British White Park cattle Breeders in close proximity to your area. If you go to the association website, they have a list of breeders for each state.

It has been my understanding that the ABWP and BW's are from the same stock originally. Although, the females are medium stock, most of the bulls reach sizes that rival other larger breeds as can be seen from our first bull Payday's picture below.

My husband who raised shorthorn when he was younger said he has never seen such an easygoin' bull. The chefs at several restaurants in western IL are now buying the American British White Park meat for gourmet and have raved about the tenderness and taste. Regardless of which association you go with, I know you're gonna enjoy raising these cattle. Here's a pic of one of the new boys from this spring.
