How can anybody pay that kind of prices and make money? A weaned calf is worth between $ 550 and $ 650 and the buyers do not know if it came from a $500 cow or a $ 80,000 heifer.

they pay the big bucks because if that cow produces a top bull or heifer calf.they know they can sell that calf for $5000 or more.because they know other breeders that are willing to pay big bucks.you can pay for the cow with ET work selling flushes an her calves.

It still makes no sense. So the breeder can sell a calf for $ 5000 to a cow/calf operation and he can only make Avg. $ 600 for a feeder calf. I guess I will never understand this part of the business.

Or he can sell embryos from this high dollar cow at $1,000 or more each. Saw one sale recently with a guarantee of 12 embryos. That's $12,000 from one flush. Whoever buys the flush may only get 3-4 calves depending on a lot of circumstances but the seller still puts $12,000 in his pocket.

I am starting to slowly understand. I know of no one in my circle of friends that uses embryo's.
Cracker I don't use them either..... but you see how those folks can "hit homeruns" with those donor cows.
