Bull calves

It's been a strange calving season for me so far. I've had 11 calves hit the ground so far, and 10 are bull calves.

Nope. I'm fine with it.

I was a bit top heavy with heifers last year but it is a bit like season rainfall, I can deal with average, 50/50 bull/heifer calves I would prefer but usually goes one way or the other.

I'm generally 50/50 but last year was heavy on heifers. Halfway through calving this year and so far exactly 50/50/.

We've been calving almost a week now. At this point, right at 40% have calved......70% are bull calves. We talked about keeping heifers back for replacements this year so we'll probably be bull heavy.

Straight statistics says this is 0.25% likely outcome. 1 in 400 calving seasons.

Neighbour had 1 heifer from 1, husband has 3 heifers out of 3 and we have 5 heifers out of 6 calves... Fingers crossed that we'll get more bulls. It sure can change quickly as we still have around 50 more cows to calve this year.

When your sample size is small (3), and you only have the option of blue or pink…we had a 3 bull year. 2 AI, 1 bought bred. Easy to tell them apart at least

We call bull calves bill payers ! With the price of fertilizer and fuel ️ we may need lots of those !
