Bring Back The Old Colors

Strange how tastes vary. I feel that corn should never be used to make beef or whiskey. I'll take the barley finished beef and rye whiskey thank you very much. :cowboy:

Venison around these parts would likely come closer to being corn fed than grass fed :lol2:

As far as preference.... I am a carnivore. I will eat just about anything that don’t eat me first. I figure one of the few things in life that I can take full advantage of is being at the top of the food chain.

As far as color of cattle.... I’ve got a little bit of almost everything I think.
Right or wrong, black calves outsell just about everything here. Yellow/white faced calves and good black baldies do well also. I’m running a hereford bull on one herd and he throws a lot of red baldies even when bred to black cows. It has hurt my pocketbook too! Only reason I keep him is bc he throws a lot of heifers and I have some full blood grey Brahman heifers/cows with him as well.

Being worth more $MONEY, and higher net profit, are two different storylines. We have a few purebred angus cows, and their calves will top the market. But, they are not our money makers. That chrome is more than just purdy to me. Add a little ear and some horn to that chrome, and you have yourself a scrounger that will turn nothing into something.

Maybe where you are. Here BWF steers and heifers almost always bring more than solid blacks.

Bring on the chrome
I don't consider baldie or brockle faced cattle chromed up. I've run Hereford bulls just for the baldie look in my herd. But a red baldie heifer won't bring nearly as much as a black baldie heifer.
Hopefully the next year's calf crop from my Hereford bulls will be majority of black baldy calves. I am expecting few red baldies from red Angus cows and a 3/4 Hereford heifer tho. Baldie and brockle is fine but feathernecks are no-go. The buyers seems to avoid feathernecks even if they are black hided.

No.

Gives the scoundrels a way to try and hide more stuff in them, and gives the crook buyers a reason dock animals. Quit trying to fk up the solid colours breeders have worked years achieving.

The Chrome makes them pretty. Can sell a purebred chromed up heifer quickly off the farm. Seed stock bulls are harder to sell if he has too much but with the right amount will help him sell quicker. Here we raise a few register stock but still sell several commercial feeders at the sale barn. First chromed up feeders did well that we sold but had to take them to a certain sale barn. The next time they were just taken. So no I don't think we need the Simmental all colored up again, though I like them. Now all my calves are pretty much solid black, so I'm backing the jet blacks :D even though my herd sire is an 1/8 Hereford and his daddy and grand daddy both have blaze faces.

AI sires we've used over the past few years have been selected for white/blaze faces - after other criteria, such as WW, API/TI, docility, and reasonable CE are met.
We're breeding for what we like... I usually feel like I've been robbed when I send a bunch of nice, weaned, vaccinated calves through the sale barn anyway, so I might as well at least enjoy looking at something other than a bunch of solid black calves.
We're not necessarily selecting for 'excessive' chrome, but I'll tell you, from the ASR Longevity Y184 calves that have hit the ground this fall out of SimAngus and %Simmental cows... if you're wanting some chrome, he's one to try!

Thanks. Nice bull. I will give that some thought.

I have looked at that bull several times. Love everything but his milk EPD. I’m looking to breed for replacements and I’m afraid it would give me milking problems.

You mean because he's in the bottom 1% for milk?
I'm not worried... have several PRS Blazin Hot daughters that have calved this year... plenty of milk, and his MM epd is comparably low. I think the Longevity daughters will have plenty.

Have a WS All In daughter in the same group...MM in top 2%... afraid she's gonna have too much! Looks like a red Holstein udder!

I breed cattle to fit the market I am selling too. If my consumers wanted a yellow, with black spots, size 2 frame, and a mature weight of 3000 pound bull, I'd work my hind end off trying to breed one.

Just my view on the whole pointless color debate.

The majority of Simmental need less milk. Sounds exactly like the bull Ron should be using. Please keep us updated on how his calves preform.

I honestly don't even LOOK at the milk EPD's. Never have.

That’s something I will keep in mind. I always thought the milk EPD was pretty relevant. Several Simmental bulls I really like have low milk EPD’s.

I'm with Jeanne. Milk epd is of minimal consideration for me... most Simmentals have plenty of milk... I usually opt for lower than higher, whenever possible, but either way, it's rarely a deciding factor.
IMO 'Milk' is not a maternal trait, but rather, a production trait, with a significant feed/energy requirement associated with it

Almost as bad as claiming the animal is homo black and it having a white face.
The white on face, bellie, legs, tail, spots - has absolutely NOTHING to do with whether or not an animal is homozygous for a color (red or black). That is genetics 101 - totally different genes. You can even have a homozygous black cow/bull that is grey/chocolate. The animal is homo blk (carrying two black genes) but is ALSO carrying the diluter gene which trumps the actual color on a black animal. Diluter gene may or may not make any change in color on a red animal - which, of course, is homo red - all red cattle are carrying two red genes.
