Plenty of studies showing that optimal protein supplementation during last trimester will result in moderate increases in BW, but no accompanying increase in incidence of dystocia.
Conversely, calves born to protein-deficient dams generate less body heat, are slower to get up and nurse, and get less/poorer colostrum if they do manage to nurse before they get chilled.
 
We have found over feeding in the last trimester to make a difference. Had a pet that get fed some feed a couple times a week year round just because she was a pet and her calves were huge when we did that. We quit that and her calves were back to average size. Our cold temps seem to make a difference as well. The colder the winter the bigger the calves.
