We are not suppose to start calving til the 8th but one of our cows decided she was not waiting. Had a nice healthy heifer calf around 70 pounds.
Got the pair settled in the barn in a nice dry pen, fed the coming first year heifers and looked across into another pen and there is a 3yo cow with the water bag out. Ran her into the barn and waited 45 minutes and then went down to check. She had had the calf but the water sac was over his face and he couldn't breathe. Pulled it off and started sticking straw up his nose. He started blowing the fluid out his nose and shake his head. I kept tickling his nose and finally he shook his head and tried to get up. The cow was licking him like crazy.

glad to hear it worked out for you. have had the first 3 calves about a week early this year

Good save! I keep one of those human baby "snot sucker" bulb things out at the barn for noses (the larger size). Have not had to use it with a calf yet, but it worked great with baby goats.
