    Working for a Living

Randi...please tell us about the brisket tags. The university owned cows near me have them. What benefits are there (over a plain eartag)?

    Order buyer/broker

Hey Cross, I remember a little while back someone on New Ag Talk had gotten a couple potloads of older bred cows from this broker. They had some pictures posted and seemed to be happy with the cows they got for the price they had agreed upon.

    Big Thanks to Denvermartinfarms

Stocky and Denver, this was a happy ending! If you guys don't mind, what do beef babies cost right now? Do you guys have a lot to pick from, or just a handful available?

    Pasture question

Hey Denver, just a thought, where are you going to pick up that many LH cows? Do you see them in your local salebarns pretty often? It would take forever to find that many at auctions back here! Private breeders would be real high priced, I would think?

    Pasture question

Good luck, if you give it a try! If it has decent fence, plenty of water, and somewhat of a corral or old barn to load out of, that would be really nice. It seems to me, when feeders are high priced, the buyers don't find as much fault with some off-colored calves. If feeder cattle take a...

    My new bull

I like him Denver!! We don't have eared cattle back here where I am at, but I was thinking about how much height he could put on calves from a set of short herf cows that I bought for $800 a head!!

    Trying to fatten up cows

What kind of wormer did you use? I have had good luck with dectomax injectable on poor cows. Unless they are really old, I can get them to turn around (once the calves are pulled) without any grain, just good pasture or all the hay they want to eat.

buying calves and taking straight to sale barn

Some sales around here have what are called co-mingled ,graded calf sales. These sales , usually once a month, sell off large lots... usually 50000 lb at a time. The calves are weighed right off the goosenecks, and the farmers then get paid for how much weight they have in each of the big groups...

    Judgement day

"Fats", are finished cattle that have been hard-fed in a feedlot...usually put in the lot at 600lb or more and sent to slaughter anywhere from 1200 up to 1500lb or so. A lot of our eastern and southeastern feeder cattle staight off the farms, are sent to big feedlots in Iowa and Nebraska. The...

    Lurkers

I also lurked here for several years before joining. I value my friendship with many of you(even Inyati)! I have a constant need to learn....and this is a great place. As a side note, I really enjoy everyone's pictures and I would post pictures of the cattle I deal in, but there are some here...

    Judgement day

    Idea--will it work?

Denver's idea was spot-on for me. I am not even a real cattleman, and I have been able to make some nice profits on heavy breds and pairs. With feeder calves where they are at right now, any wanna- be cowman like me with a checkbook, some pasture or lots of hay, and a little bit of an eye for...

    Sharing some pictures

M.Magis....Those are some nice calves you have there! I am about 2 hours away from you, near Morgantown WV, but over the line in Pa. I am running a few shy of 100 head this year...I keep some extra stockers in the summer. I am having good luck using a mineral in the summer with CTC and IGR. I...
